Indian Army Remembers Operation Sindoor on One Year of Pahalgam Terror Attack

The CSR Journal Magazine

On April 22, 2025, Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir, was struck by a horrific terrorist attack that resulted in the loss of 26 innocent lives. This incident, attributed to Pakistan-backed militants, has left a profound impact on the local community and the nation at large. On the eve of the first anniversary of this tragedy, the Indian Army has chosen to remember Operation Sindoor, a mission initiated in response to the violence.

Reports indicate that the attackers specifically questioned victims about their religious affiliations before carrying out the killings. The brutal nature of the assault has led to ongoing grief for the families affected, with many still grappling with their immense loss nearly a year later.

Families Affected by the Attack

One of the victims’ families is that of Prasanta Satpathy, whose widow shared her struggles in the aftermath of the attack. She expressed heartbreak over the loss of her husband and described how their lives were turned upside down. She stated, “It’s been almost a year. Not a single day has passed that I haven’t remembered him.” The widow highlighted her transition from temporary employment to a necessity for survival, emphasising the struggle to provide for her household.

She also discussed her frustrations regarding the government’s promises of a stable job and financial support for the families of the victims. Although she acknowledged receiving some financial assistance, she noted that the promised government job had not materialised. The widow urged that the commitments made by authorities be fulfilled in a timely manner, expressing hope that her situation would be addressed.

The emotional toll on the victim’s families is compounded by the lack of closure, as the nation collectively mourns the brutal attack that shattered lives and communities.

Operational Responses by the Indian Armed Forces

In the wake of the Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7, 2025, targeting terrorist launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. This operation reportedly resulted in the destruction of nine significant terror facilities associated with groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. The action resulted in the elimination of over 100 terrorists, demonstrating India’s resolve in combating terrorism.

The operation led to an escalation in military activity, with retaliatory drone attacks and shelling reported between India and Pakistan over several days. The Indian armed forces effectively countered these aggressions, striking military installations in Pakistan, which prompted a cessation of hostilities on May 10 after negotiations between the respective military leaderships.

Following Operation Sindoor, another significant operation, dubbed Operation Mahadev, successfully tracked and eliminated three individuals implicated in the Pahalgam attack, furthering the objective of justice for the victims’ families and restoring security in the region.

Political and Military Leadership Statements

India’s political leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, have reiterated their commitment to responding decisively to any acts of terrorism. Modi stated that India would not differentiate between the state sponsors of terrorism and the masterminds behind these heinous acts. This determination to act has been echoed by military leaders, including the Chief of Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, who described Operation Sindoor as a prime example of collaboration between different branches of the armed forces.

Additionally, the Chief of the Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, highlighted the operation as a showcase of the Indian Air Force’s capabilities. The strategic deployment of naval assets was also noted to influence Pakistan’s military stance in the region. Prime Minister Modi further announced Mission Sudarshan Chakra aimed at bolstering India’s defence posture and capabilities.
