India aims to elevate its sports goods exports from around Rs 3,000 crore to approximately Rs 80,000 crore, according to Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao. Speaking at the opening of the 4th edition of the India Sporting Goods Fair (ISGF) 2026, he emphasized the necessity for manufacturers to adopt an ambitious mindset and forward-looking strategies propelled by innovation. The fair, dedicated to positioning India as a global leader in sports goods manufacturing, exports, and trade, was attended by exhibitors and international buyers.

Rao underscored that to realise the target of increasing exports to Rs 80,000 crore, manufacturers need to scale their operations substantially, approximately 25 times the current output. He urged the industry to dream big to achieve remarkable growth. He also highlighted the importance of youth and next-generation entrepreneurs in driving this expansion, encouraging them to take on leadership roles.

Government Support for the Sports Manufacturing Sector

Reiterating the government’s commitment, Rao mentioned that Rs 500 crore has already been allocated in the Union Budget for the sports goods sector. He encouraged new manufacturers to enter the market and emphasized the need for exploring joint ventures and international collaborations. The Ministry is prepared to assist such partnerships, aiming to increase the competitiveness of Indian manufacturers in the global arena.

Joint Secretary (Sports), Vineel Krishna, expressed the government’s ambition to expand the sports goods manufacturing sector, emphasizing its importance not only for domestic consumption but also for enhancing India’s export capabilities. He indicated that a new sports goods manufacturing scheme could be launched in the coming months, contingent on necessary approvals. Additionally, he noted the increased interest from various state governments in promoting the sector’s growth.
