India Sets Record By Opening A New Airport Every 50 Days

The CSR Journal Magazine

India is witnessing an extraordinary transformation in its aviation sector, opening a new airport every 50 days. This remarkable pace reflects one of the fastest infrastructure expansions globally, designed to meet the surging demand for air travel across the country. At the heart of this growth story is Andhra Pradesh, which has emerged as a vital aviation hub, complementing the central government’s ambitious plans to enhance connectivity and boost the economy.

New Airports Across India

The pace at which India is introducing new airports is unprecedented. From just 74 airports in operation back in 2014, the country now boasts 163 functional airports, more than doubling its aviation infrastructure in under a decade. Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu highlighted this achievement as a global milestone during the 30th CII Partnership Summit in Visakhapatnam, stressing the country’s capacity-building in passenger traffic and airport facilities. This rapid expansion is not merely about increased numbers but also reflects a focused effort to connect remote and underserved parts of India through the Regional Connectivity Scheme UDAN. The scheme has been pivotal in operationalising 649 routes connecting 93 airports that previously lacked sufficient air links. Since its inception in 2016, over 15.6 million passengers have benefited from affordable and accessible air travel, marking a significant shift in how people across the country travel for personal and professional reasons.

Andhra Pradesh: The Emerging Aviation Powerhouse

Among the states riding the wave of this aviation boom, Andhra Pradesh stands out for its strategic infrastructure development and ambitious projects. The state plans to increase its number of airports from seven to fourteen, a move that is part of a larger integrated ecosystem aimed at positioning Andhra Pradesh as a premier aviation hub. Key developments include the establishment of four flight training organisations, an aviation university in Visakhapatnam, and one of the world’s largest maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities scheduled to open at the Bhogapuram international airport by mid-2026. This MRO is expected to cover 500 acres, attracting global aerospace and defence manufacturers while creating substantial employment opportunities for local youth.

Moreover, the state is taking big strides into the future of aviation with ventures like the proposed drone city and plans to introduce India’s first drone taxis, expected to launch from Andhra Pradesh within two years. Such initiatives reflect the region’s commitment to technology-driven growth and are aligned with national ambitions for innovation in air travel.

Towards Vision 2047

All these regional developments occur within the framework of India’s broader Vision 2047, which aims to prepare the country’s aviation sector for the next quarter-century and beyond. The vision sets an ambitious target of expanding the number of airports to between 350 and 400 by the 100th anniversary of India’s independence. This goal is not only about infrastructure but also about the sector’s contribution to the economy and employment.

Aviation already accounts for $53.6 billion in the country’s GDP as of fiscal year 2023-24, supporting 7.7 million jobs directly and indirectly. Passenger traffic is forecasted to nearly double from current levels, reaching approximately 430 million by the end of fiscal year 2026, while international air travel continues to grow steadily at 6.9 percent annually. These numbers underscore the critical role aviation is playing in India’s broader economic narrative, connecting people, driving tourism, trade, and industry, and positioning the country as a global aviation leader.
