IIT Delhi Implements Measures for Student Support and Well-Being

The CSR Journal Magazine

IIT Delhi has announced a variety of measures aimed at enhancing the well-being of students and providing academic flexibility. This initiative comes in the wake of recent protests following the tragic death of a 31-year-old MSc Physics student. The institute emphasised its commitment to prioritising student welfare and mental health, reflecting its aim to bolster the support systems available to students during their academic pursuits.

To alleviate academic pressure, IIT Delhi has introduced changes to its curriculum effective from 2025. Among the modifications are reduced credit loads for first-semester students and the introduction of life skills courses. Additionally, class sizes for first-year departmental classes will range between 30 to 60 students, with the intention of minimising stress. Weekend examinations are also being reduced, while flexibility in credit distribution remains intact. Notably, starting from the academic year 2024–25, the institute has eliminated the minimum CGPA requirement for graduation in the BTech programme.

Enhancing Mentorship and Faculty Collaboration

The institute has reiterated its commitment to fostering interactions between students and faculty, facilitated by the Student-Teacher Interaction Council (STIC). Regular semester-based gatherings promote dialogue and rapport, while faculty members are encouraged to engage with students through open-door office hours and project guidance. Inputs from Class Committees further enhance this collaborative spirit, aiming to create a supportive academic environment.

Moreover, IIT Delhi has placed a strong focus on mental health support, establishing a comprehensive framework that includes round-the-clock access to counsellors and psychiatrists, including professionals from renowned institutions such as AIIMS and VIMHANS. Students have the opportunity to access fully reimbursed external care and benefit from an established emergency response system alongside the Academic Unit Wellness Committees (AUWC). A mentorship initiative called the UG Buddy Programme has also expanded to include both PG Buddies and International Buddies, offering additional layers of support to students.

Grievance Redressal and Diversity Initiatives

IIT Delhi has instituted various channels for addressing grievances, ensuring that concerns can be reported and managed effectively. A centralised ERP portal and the Board for Student Welfare (BSW) are among the mechanisms in place. Additionally, specialised cells for SC/ST and OBC, hostel wardens, the Internal Complaints Committee, and confidential counselling services provide multiple avenues for students to seek assistance. These systems are designed to facilitate transparent resolutions for students experiencing difficulties.

Diversity and inclusion have also been at the forefront of initiatives within the institute. The Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) has spearheaded programmes that promote non-discrimination and accessibility since 2022. Freshers are equipped with knowledge through sensitisation initiatives like the Initiative for Gender Equity and Sensitisation (IGES), Initiative for Caste Equity (ICE), and the Office of Accessible Education (OAE). These programmes work to address both implicit and explicit biases pertaining to caste, gender, language, regional backgrounds, and ethnicity, fostering a more inclusive campus environment.

In light of recent developments, IIT Delhi is also taking steps to scrutinise the circumstances surrounding the death of the MSc Physics student. The external committee investigating the case has been reconstituted, with retired Delhi High Court judge Mukta Gupta appointed as the new chairperson. This committee will explore factors associated with the tragic event while considering concerns raised by the student body, as protests continue over the matter.
