Govt’s ‘Bharat Taxi’ Launches Today: Get Rides 30% Cheaper Than Ola, Uber, Rapido

The CSR Journal Magazine

A new app-based cab service, Bharat Taxi, was officially launched on 5 February. Developed under a cooperative ownership model with government support, the platform aims to provide affordable and reliable transportation services to commuters across the country.

Focus on affordability and driver empowerment

Bharat Taxi has been introduced with the objective of offering lower fares to passengers, along with a more sustainable and equitable model for driver-partners. The platform is expected to offer rides at up to 30 per cent lower prices compared to existing app-based taxi services. The cooperative structure allows participating drivers to hold a stake in the company, thereby giving them a say in decision-making and an opportunity to benefit directly from the platform’s earnings.

The initiative is part of a larger push to bring in alternatives to dominant private players in the market, with an emphasis on ensuring fair practices, better fare distribution, and improved service delivery.

Competitive positioning in the mobility sector

Bharat Taxi’s entry into the ride-hailing market introduces a new option for daily commuters in India. The platform arrives at a time when users have raised concerns over surge pricing, driver availability, and service experience on existing platforms. By operating on a non-profit driven approach, Bharat Taxi seeks to create a balanced ecosystem for both drivers and passengers.

The cooperative ownership allows drivers to become stakeholders, which the platform’s promoters believe will lead to better accountability and service quality. The model also aims to eliminate the high commission charges that drivers on other platforms often face.

Nationwide rollout expected in phases

While the app has been formally launched, its services are expected to begin gradually, with an initial rollout in major cities. The platform plans to expand service availability in a phased manner to cover more regions over time.

Passengers can book rides through the Bharat Taxi mobile application, which is now available for download. The app is designed to support multiple languages to cater to users from diverse regions. Features such as upfront fare estimates, real-time ride tracking, and driver ratings have been integrated to ensure convenience and safety.

Part of a broader cooperative initiative

The launch of Bharat Taxi is being seen as a significant step under India’s cooperative economic vision. Authorities have previously highlighted the importance of promoting cooperatives as a way to empower grassroots stakeholders and reduce reliance on monopolistic business models.

Bharat Taxi’s model aligns with this approach, offering an alternative platform that integrates digital technology with community-led ownership. As the platform gains traction, it is expected to compete with established brands by offering cost-effective and transparent ride services.

More details on city-wise availability and service schedules are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
