Election Commission Establishes 100-Meter ‘Lakshman Rekha’ to Secure West Bengal Polling Stations

The CSR Journal Magazine

In an unprecedented move to ensure a transparent and peaceful voting process for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a series of high-tech and logistical interventions. At the heart of these measures is the physical demarcation of a 100-meter “security perimeter” around every polling booth, colloquially being termed as the ‘Lakshman Rekha.’

Strict Entry and Perimeter Control

To prevent unauthorized gathering and voter intimidation, officials will use white chalk to draw a boundary 100 meters from each booth. Beyond this line, entry is strictly restricted to valid voters.

Verification Hubs: Two dedicated desks will be positioned outside this perimeter.

The Team: Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and their assistants will manage these desks to verify voter credentials before individuals are permitted to cross the line and enter the booth.

High-Tech Surveillnce: AI and Body Cams

The Commission is integrating cutting-edge technology to maintain a 360-degree vigil over the electoral process.

AI Monitoring: Artificial Intelligence-enabled cameras will be deployed to detect suspicious patterns or overcrowding in real-time.

Body-Worn Cameras: In a first for the state, Micro-observers will be equipped with body cameras. This move aims to document every interaction and provide an indisputable record of the conduct inside and around the polling premises.

Cracking Down on Proxy Voting

To eliminate the threat of fraudulent voting, the ECI is focusing heavily on the ASD (Absent, Shifted, Dead) list.

Doorstep Verification: BLOs are mandated to deliver voter slips directly to residents. Any slip that cannot be delivered must be accounted for with a specific reason.

Rigid Screening: If a voter marked as “absent” during the slip distribution appears on election day, the Presiding Officer will conduct a rigorous cross-examination and document verification before allowing them to cast a ballot.

“The goal is to restore complete voter confidence. By utilizing a ‘watertight’ technological framework, we aim to set a new standard for electoral integrity in Bengal,” noted a source close to the Commission.

Public Awareness and Legal Consequences

Beyond physical security, the Commission is launching an extensive advertisement campaign to educate citizens on electoral laws. This initiative will clearly outline behaviors that constitute “electoral offenses,” warning that immediate legal action will be taken against anyone caught engaging in malpractice or suspicious activity near the booths.

With these layered security protocols combining physical boundaries with digital oversight the Election Commission is signaling a zero-tolerance policy toward electoral interference in the upcoming polls.
