Suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Kalyan Banerjee has expressed concerns regarding the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) lack of response to a communication from rebel TMC MPs who have recently aligned with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Banerjee emphasised that the delay in addressing the matter could have significant political consequences, highlighting that the issue should be resolved expediently to uphold public confidence in the electoral process.

Speaking to ANI, Banerjee stated, “The rebel MPs did reach out to the Election Commission and have submitted a letter, yet we have not seen any response from the Commission to date.” He underscored the necessity for a timely resolution, asserting that maintaining public trust is crucial in matters of justice.

He elaborated on the situation, suggesting that prolonging the issue could lead to further complications. “Granting them more time causes inconvenience, doesn’t it? There is also a political ramification to this,” he added. Banerjee urged that the matter should be tackled decisively to avoid undermining confidence in the democratic process.

Discussion Between Banerjee and Priyanka Gandhi

On the same day, Banerjee was involved in a discussion with Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra near Makar Dwar, concerning the political affiliations between the two parties. Banerjee was purportedly protesting against the merger of TMC MPs into the NCP during this encounter.

Gandhi approached Banerjee, confronting him with, “You took them from Congress to TMC,” referencing the political shifts involving both parties. In response, Banerjee noted the history of Mamata Banerjee’s ousting from Congress in 1997, which has often been a point of contention in their political narrative.

Gandhi rebutted by insisting, “Rajiv Gandhi always promoted Mamata Banerjee.” Banerjee acknowledged her statement, which underlines the complex historical ties within West Bengal’s political landscape.

Criticism of Mamata Banerjee’s Leadership

In a related instance, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, a leader within the NCP, directed criticism towards former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Ghosh referred to recent incidents involving law enforcement actions against teachers protesting in West Bengal, stating, “I have seen on social media that there was a lathi charge on teachers during their demonstration.”

Highlighting accountability, Ghosh demanded an explanation from Banerjee, asserting that as the then Chief Minister, she should respond to the situation and address the grievances of the teachers. This remark adds another layer of contention in the ongoing political dialogue surrounding the leadership and actions of Banerjee’s administration.
