A pilot for Delta Air Lines was taken into custody on child sex abuse charges soon after his flight landed at San Francisco International Airport. The suspect, 34‑year‑old Rustom Bhagwagar, was removed from the cockpit minutes after Delta Flight 2809 arrived from Minneapolis.
Ramey Warrant Leads to Arrest in Child Sex Case
Investigators say the case has been under scrutiny since April, when Contra Costa County law enforcement began probing alleged sexual misconduct involving a minor. They later secured a Ramey warrant—which allows arrest prior to formal charges—leading to Bhagwagar’s detention.
Federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), along with Contra Costa County deputies, boarded the aircraft following its arrival at the gate. Witnesses reported at least ten officers moving swiftly toward the cockpit and escorting Bhagwagar off in cuffs. One passenger described the scene: “The officers and agents were pushing their way up through the aisle and into the cockpit with badges, guns, and different agency vests/markings, where they cuffed the co‑pilot before leading him away.”
Delta Pilot Charged With 5 Felony Counts in Child Abuse Case
HSI has formally charged Bhagwagar with five felony counts of oral copulation with a child under ten. Although earlier statements hinted at involvement with child pornography, the specific charges now clarify the allegations. He remains in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility with bail set at $5 million.
Delta responded by suspending Bhagwagar immediately and emphasised the airline’s “zero tolerance for unlawful conduct.” The company confirmed it is fully cooperating with authorities and said it was “appalled by reports of the charges related to the arrest.”
Bhagwagar Taken Into Custody While Passengers Deplaned
According to reports, the pilot’s colleague in the cockpit was not informed of the impending arrest, a move intended to minimise any chance of warning Bhagwagar. The arrest unfolded while many passengers were still preparing to disembark. Aviation blog View From the Wing released a short video showing officers exiting the cockpit, underscoring the coordination among agencies.
Authorities have not ruled out additional investigative leads or possible accomplices. The agencies involved are continuing to examine all evidence and are expected to release further information as the inquiry progresses.
