Welspun India Limited, the global leaders of home textiles, aims to employ 500-600 migrant workers that were displaced due to the pandemic. With an objective to generate employment opportunities and continued livelihood for them, the company has collaborated with Pravasi Rojgar Yojana – an initiative by Bollywood actor and philanthropist Sonu Sood to provide jobs to migrant workers.
These migrant workers, both skilled and unskilled, will be positioned across various roles at Welspun’s manufacturing facilities in Anjar and Vapi.
The lockdown imposed in the country as a preventive measure to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus severely impacted migrant workers, several of whom lost their jobs or travelled back to their home towns. Taking cognizance of this, Welspun India CSR has partnered with the Pravasi Rojgar Yojana to help them reel back into the ecosystem with a stable job opportunity.
The company will be hiring workers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and taking care of their travel expenses. Once the workers arrive at the manufacturing plant, they will also be provided with housing, medical and canteen facilities. The company will additionally provide adequate training to unskilled workers for their role at the manufacturing unit.
Speaking about this CSR initiative, Dipali Goenka, Joint MD & CEO, Welspun India Limited said, “The pandemic affected several nations across the globe, however, one of the most impacted communities in India was the migrant labour. Due to the unprecedented consequences of COVID-19, several workers lost their employment and many others went back home. In line with our ethos of putting our community at the core of all actions, we have associated with Pravasi Rojgar Yojana to help at least 500 migrant workers get back on their feet by providing employment to them at our manufacturing facilities in Gujarat.”
In order to ensure the health and wellbeing of its employees, Welspun has undertaken several measures including the institutionalization of a system across their factories called Penta Protocol, which is a five-layered security framework consisting of social distancing guidelines, workplace practices, thermal scanning, sanitization and several other strict regulations.
