A four-storey building collapsed in Janta Mazdoor Colony here, killing two and injuring eight on Saturday. Those trapped include 10 members of a family and others living nearby.
It has been confirmed by the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) that the bodies of a man and a woman have been recovered from under the rubble. A rescue operation is underway, with seven fire tenders deployed at the site. It is believed that many more people are still trapped under the debris.
A police officer confirmed that they received a call around 7 a.m. regarding the collapse and immediately dispatched a rescue team to the spot.
One of the residents of the area shared a horrifying account. She said she was sleeping when she heard loud cries and people screaming. “It must have been around 7:45 a.m. When I went outside, I saw the disaster and heard people saying, ‘Save my family! They are trapped inside.’ I am not sure how many people are trapped, but some here are saying around 10 members of one family are inside,” she said.
A similar incident happened a day earlier—three old commercial buildings collapsed near a Delhi Metro tunnelling site in Azad Market, North Delhi, killing a 45-year-old man.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the victim’s family. DMRC also stated that they had previously informed the building owner about the unsafe condition of the structure and had asked for evacuation before tunnelling work began. These three collapsed structures were over 30 years old and were mostly used to store fabric and bags.
Police confirmed that about 25 people worked in the building; however, during the incident, only one person was present. He was rushed to the hospital but declared dead upon arrival.
