Chhota Bheem Railway Safety Campaign:

Chhota Bheem Railway Safety Campaign:

Chhota Bheem Railway Safety Campaign

Chhota Bheem Railway Safety Campaign

Stampede at Goa’s Lairai Temple Festival Leaves Seven Dead, Scores Injured; Probe Ordered

The annual Shri Lairai Devi Temple religious festival in Shirgao village transformed into a disastrous stampede early on Saturday morning which killed seven people alongside injuring more than eighty others. Thousands of worshippers including population from Goa alongside neighboring state attendees gathered during the annual Lairai Zatra festival.

The stampede incident took place across the timeline from 3:30 am until 4:00 am while numerous devotees gathered around the temple slope. Several individuals who lost balance on the overcrowded terrain triggered consecutive falls and set off a chain reaction which caused the stampede. This area witnessed forty to fifty people collapsing at once which triggered widespread chaos and mass movement among the congested crowd.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant responded swiftly to the scene while later checking on injured patients in the hospital before starting a formal investigation. The authorities received formal instructions to perform a thorough investigation. Sawant declared that authorities will publish the investigation results to the public. He also revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had contacted him, offering full support and expressing condolences to the affected families.

Goa Health Minister Provides Update on the Victims

Meanwhile, Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane provided an update on the victims, noting that approximately 80 people were being treated for injuries, with about 10 in critical condition. “Our medical teams have been working tirelessly. Saving lives remains our top priority,” Rane said. He added that additional doctors and emergency personnel were deployed to North Goa District Hospital and Goa Medical College in Bambolim.

The Lairai Zatra is a centuries-old tradition that honors Goddess Lairai, revered as an incarnation of Parvati. Held every April or May, the highlight of the festival is the ‘agnidivya’ or fire-walking ritual, where thousands of barefoot devotees walk across burning embers in an act of devotion and spiritual fulfillment. The night also includes traditional dances, rhythmic stick-clashing rituals, and the symbolic lighting of a giant bonfire.

Despite extensive security arrangements, including the deployment of over 1,000 police personnel, drone surveillance, and riot control vehicles, crowd management proved challenging. Officers in plain clothes had also been stationed to deter thefts, and 300 traffic police personnel were on duty to manage vehicular movement.

Panic on Slope Triggers Stampede

Initial witness reports and police statements suggest that the stampede was confined to a specific zone and may have been worsened by the sloped terrain and a sudden surge in the crowd. There were unverified accounts of a possible electric shock triggering the panic, although this has not been confirmed by officials.

The temple’s significance and the scale of the festival meant that thousands had gathered from Maharashtra, Karnataka, and across Goa. Despite crowd control measures, the unexpected rush overwhelmed the available infrastructure. Emergency services were activated within minutes, and rescue teams began pulling victims from the pileup.

Prime Minister Modi took to social media to share his condolences: “Saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede in Shirgao, Goa. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope the injured recover swiftly. The local administration is offering all necessary assistance.”

Helpline Support has been Provided

A 24-hour helpline has been set up for families seeking information about their loved ones. Health officials have also confirmed the deployment of ten advanced ambulances and the activation of trauma care units at key hospitals.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over what is typically a jubilant event celebrating community faith and tradition. Calls for stricter crowd regulation and infrastructure upgrades at major religious sites are now growing louder, even as the state prepares to release findings from the pending inquiry.

Australia Votes Today to Elect Federal Government After A Delay

Australia Elections

Australia is going to elect their next federal government after a delay in the 2025 general elections which were originally expected to be held on April 12. A cyclone disrupted the government’s plan and prompted the current prime minister Anthony Albanese to reschedule the biggest elections of the country.

Prime Minister Albanese is the leader of the Centre left Australian Labour Party (ALP) and is seeking re-election after coming to power for the first time in 2022. Leader of the Conservative Liberal National Coalition, Peter Dutton, is contesting his first election as the opposition leader to Albanese.

Voting Compulsory in Australia

While Albanese is a veteran with nearly 3 decades of Parliament experience, Dutton is a former minister for defence and home affairs, and is known for his polarising stance on immigration and social politics. The ALP government, which is currently in power, is facing criticism over Antony Albanese’s handling of sensitive topics such as housing, indigenous issues and rising concern about antisemitism and Islamophobia. It is in this context that Dutton’s candidature has hope in this election. He is seen as a hardline conservative.

Australia does not vote directly for its prime minister and the leader of the party that forms the majority in the house of representatives, makes the government. Voting in Australia is compulsory, failing to do which without a valid reason results in a fine of Australian dollar 20.

The citizens of Australia will vote on issues of cost of living, housing affordability, healthcare strain, energy, climate and the country’s relation with China and US.

Lairai Devi Temple

Lairai Devi Temple

57% License Applicants Fail Car Driving Test in Gujarat

Driving License Test

A recent report has revealed that more than half of those applying for a licence to drive a car in Gujarat are failing their practical driving test. According to data from the Sarathi website, 57% of applicants did not clear the test in the 2024-25 period, highlighting the challenges faced by new drivers in the state.

Testing Challenges and Trends

In 2024-25, around 7.58 lakh people took a total of 20.5 lakh driving tests in Gujarat. Out of these, only 6 lakh successfully obtained their licences. The failure rate for four-wheeler tests was particularly high, with most applicants needing an average of three attempts before passing. In contrast, only 15% of two-wheeler applicants failed their test, showing a marked improvement from previous years when the failure rate for cars was 47% and for two-wheelers was 27%.

Officials at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) have pointed out that the most difficult parts of the test for car drivers are the up-gradient and reverse S tests. More than 80% of failures occur during these sections, where drivers are required to keep the car from rolling backwards on a slope or navigate tight turns without touching the poles. Other challenging tasks include parallel parking and the English 8 track test, which checks a driver’s ability to manoeuvre the car through a figure-eight-shaped course.

The RTO has also noted a shift in the age group of applicants, with many young people applying for their learner’s licence as soon as they turn 18. Officials believe this trend, encouraged by parents who want their children to avoid illegal driving, has contributed to the higher failure rates for cars.

Some regions in Gujarat, such as Bhuj, Porbandar, and Dahod, have recorded the highest failure rates, while Bavla and Navsari have the lowest. Despite the difficulties, the overall performance of two-wheeler applicants has improved, with fewer candidates failing compared to previous years.

The high failure rate for car driving tests in Gujarat reflects the increasing strictness and complexity of the testing process, as well as the need for better preparation among applicants.

High Failure Rates Not Limited to Gujarat

It is not just Gujarat where passing the driving licence test has become a significant hurdle. Across the country, stricter testing and reforms have led to a sharp rise in failure rates in several states.

In Kerala, the introduction of tougher, technology-backed tests and real-world driving scenarios has seen the pass rate plummet from a previous 95-100% to just 40-52%. The reforms, which include advanced manoeuvres, public road testing, and stricter scrutiny, were brought in to improve road safety after concerns that lenient standards allowed unskilled drivers to obtain licences, contributing to rising accidents.

Delhi has also seen a similar trend. Nearly half of those taking the automated driving licence test in the city fail, with success rates below 45% at several test centres. The automated system uses sensors and cameras to assess drivers on 24 parameters, leaving little room for error or human intervention. In contrast, manual tests in Delhi still have a much higher pass rate, around 80%, raising questions about the consistency and rigour of different testing methods.

Maharashtra presents a different picture, with a very low average failure rate of just 2.4%. However, experts have expressed concern that such high pass rates may mean the tests are not stringent enough, potentially allowing unskilled drivers on the roads. Some RTOs in Maharashtra have failure rates below 1%, while only a few exceed 5%, prompting calls for tougher testing and more automated tracks to improve road safety.

These contrasting figures show that while stricter testing can lead to higher failure rates, it also aims to ensure that only skilled drivers receive licences. In the past, high pass rates often meant that even those who could not drive well were able to get a licence, raising serious concerns about road safety. The move towards more rigorous and technology-driven assessments is seen as a step to address this issue nationwide.

CSR News: How Unnati Project is Empowering Villages Through Water, Sanitation, and Community Leadership

In rural India, progress often begins with access—access to water, to basic infrastructure, and to the dignity of safe sanitation. Larsen & Toubro’s Unnati Project, part of its Integrated Community Development Programme (ICDP), addresses these essentials through a structured, phased, and community-led approach.

While aligned with the goals of national missions like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Unnati is built on the principle that development begins with water. In regions affected by acute water scarcity, the program starts with watershed management. Once water security is achieved, it moves forward with sanitation, health, education, and livelihood interventions.

Community-Driven Sanitation at Scale

Unnati introduces sanitation initiatives from the second year of each four-year cycle. Implementation is rooted in direct community engagement—right from design consultations to construction, monitoring, and long-term upkeep.

Across 70 villages in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu, Unnati has helped address entrenched sanitation challenges:

· 4,456 toilets constructed through the program

· 2,719 toilets built independently by families inspired by the initiative

· 41 villages declared open defecation-free across across Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu

The model places strong emphasis on local ownership. Village youth are trained in masonry to support construction and maintenance, while women lead household-level change and decision-making. In Rajasthan, toilets carry the names of the women who championed their adoption—marking recognition and leadership at the grassroots.

In Coimbatore, Unnati has touched over 8,000 individuals in partnership with the National Agro Foundation. Beyond sanitation, the focus extends to water access, agricultural support, and capacity-building—ensuring integrated development at the community level.

Unnati is not a one-time intervention. It is a phased, people-first model of development that prioritises dignity, fosters community ownership, and enables sustainable outcomes.

To extend the reach of this initiative, L&T has collaborated with KK Create on a campaign that brings forward authentic community voices and real-life narratives. The communication underscores how access to sanitation directly advances dignity, health, and social progress.
