Delhi MCD Polls Scheduled for June 2

voting

Delhi will witness its Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections on June 2, to fill two seats in its 18-member financial and policy-making Standing Committee. These seats became vacant following the resignation of two councillors who were elected as MLAs this February. On the same day, elections for the post of Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of all 12 zonal ward committees will also take place.

The two councillors elected as MLAs represented Wards 164 and 74 of the MCD. These councillors had served as members of the MCD Standing Committee for the South Zone Ward Committee and the City-SP Zone Wards Committee.

The elections to fill the remaining two seats on the Standing Committee were initially scheduled for May 21 but were postponed due to the military conflict between India and Pakistan, following the Pahalgam terror attack in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The new date—June 2—falls on a Monday, and elections will be held through a secret ballot.

Elections Before This One

During the previous ward committee polls, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured five of the 12 zonal committee seats, while the remaining went to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, the June 2 polls come in the wake of 15 councillors quitting AAP and forming an independent political outfit called the Indraprastha Vikas Party (Indraprastha being the historical name of Delhi).

Following the formation of this new front, AAP’s numbers in the MCD have dropped to 98, while the BJP now holds 117 councillors. The Congress party currently holds eight councillors.

The Standing Committee plays a vital role in the civic body, as no proposal exceeding ₹5 crore can be passed without its approval.

The recent defections—including that of former Leader of the House in the MCD, Mukesh Goel—may further complicate AAP’s position in the upcoming civic leadership contest. These developments come just weeks after the BJP regained control of the MCD by winning the mayoral elections. The currently ruling BJP government in Delhi has reversed its fortunes after spending two years in the opposition.

Ex-US President Biden Detected with Advanced Stage Prostrate Cancer

Joe Biden

Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, which has spread to his bones. Biden, 82, was diagnosed on Friday after experiencing urinary symptoms. He, along with his family, is currently reviewing treatment options with doctors.

“Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are stronger in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support,” read a statement written by Biden on his social media platform, X, posted on Monday.

Biden is reported to be suffering from prostate cancer that has metastasised to stage four—the most advanced stage of the disease. Most prostate cancer cases are typically detected at earlier stages. Biden’s office also stated that his cancer scored a 9 out of 10 on the Gleason score grading system, indicating a highly aggressive form. This test helps doctors determine how likely the cancer is to grow and spread.

President Trump Sympathises

Biden’s physical health and mental acuity first came under public scrutiny during his 2021–2025 presidential term. Former President Donald Trump, who has frequently criticised Biden since taking office in January 2021, expressed sympathy on Sunday for Biden and his wife, Jill, via a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.

“Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis,” wrote the former U.S. President, addressing to the US First Lady Melania Trump. “We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”

First Aid trucks to Gaza Enter After 3 Month Blockade

Gaza

The first aid truck entered Gaza after nearly three months of Israel’s complete blockade of food, medicines, and other supplies into the war-affected area. Israel and the United Nations said on Monday that five trucks carrying baby food and other aid entered the territory of over 2 million Palestinians via the Kerem Shalom crossing, according to COGAT—the Israeli defence body in charge of coordinating aid to Gaza (Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories).

The United Nations called the move “a welcome development” but also emphasized that more aid is urgently needed to address what it described as the worst humanitarian crisis the world is currently facing. Gaza is also facing severe food shortages, and as recently as last week, security experts warned of an impending famine in the territory.

More Aid Needed: UN

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier said that his decision to allow limited and basic aid into Gaza came after pressure from allied nations, who warned that they would not support Israel’s military offensive if ‘images of widespread hunger’ emerged from Palestinian territories. Similarly, United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher stated that the few trucks allowed are “a drop in the ocean of what is urgently needed.” He further mentioned that an additional four UN trucks had been cleared to enter Gaza and might arrive by tomorrow, according to COGAT officials.

During and after the ceasefire, more than 600 aid trucks entered Gaza daily. However, given the chaotic situation on the ground, the UN predicts that some of this aid could be looted or stolen. Fletcher urged the Israeli government to open multiple crossings in northern and southern Gaza to permit a regular flow of aid trucks from wherever possible.

The announcement of aid trucks entering the war-hit zone has raised some hope among Palestinians who are desperately in need of food, medicine, and other essential supplies. Over the weekend, Israel launched a new wave of air and ground operations across Gaza, and the army has announced that Khan Younis—the second-largest city in Gaza—needs to be evacuated. This is the same city where Israeli forces carried out a massive operation earlier in the 19-month war, which left much of the area reduced to rubble.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said on Monday that Israel plans to “take control of all of Gaza” as well as establish a new system to distribute aid that circumvents Hamas. He also stated that Israel would not oppose the voluntary emigration of a significant portion of Gaza’s population to other countries.

UK and EU Come Together After 9 Years of Brexit

EU and Britain

The United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) have announced their agreement to the most significant reset of defence and trade ties between the two parties since Brexit. On Monday, the two sides moved on from their rancorous divorce after Brexit on February 1, 2020. Nine years after the UK voted to leave one of the largest and strongest blocs in the world—the European Union—the country will now take part in a joint procurement project.

Britain is the second-largest defence spender in Europe. Following U.S. President Donald Trump’s reset of the global order—by introducing multiple changes in trade, immigration, environmental, and defence policies—the two sides have come together in a diplomatically strategic move. Both parties also agreed to make it easier for British goods, food, and visitors to reach the European Union, for which they signed a new facilitation deal. Tensions heightened by President Trump, along with his warnings that Europe should do more to protect itself, prompted governments around the world to rethink their security, defence, and trade ties.

UK PM Supports the Deal

Keir Starmer, the current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom—who supported remaining in the EU during the Brexit referendum—has also come to believe that offering benefits to Britons, such as access to faster EU airport eGates, will help to quell the lingering sense of betrayal from the Brexit campaign, particularly among supporters of Nigel Farage.

Starmer was also backed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa. After concluding discussions on the deal, the UK Prime Minister stated that the agreement marked “a new era in our relationship.”

“At a time of global instability, and when our continent faces the greatest threat it has seen in generations, we in Europe stand together,” said Ursula von der Leyen.

Britain also noted that the reset with its biggest trading partner would reduce red tape on food and agricultural products. This, in turn, will make food cheaper, improve energy security, and add nearly £1 billion to the economy by 2040.

YouTuber Dhruv Rathi

Dhruv Rathi

YouTuber Dhruv Rathi ने अपने यूट्यूब चैनल पर वीडियो अपलोड किया है, जिसका टाइटल ‘The Sikh Warrior Who Terrified The Mugals, Legend Of Banda Singh Bahadur’ है।

Centre’s 30-Day pushback deadline heightens India-Bangladesh geopolitical strain

In a significant move with deep geopolitical repercussions across South Asia, the Indian government has launched a high-intensity campaign to identify and deport illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh and Myanmar within 30 days—a directive that has already begun to escalate tensions between New Delhi and Dhaka.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has instructed all Indian states and union territories to expedite the identification and deportation of suspected Bangladeshi and Myanmarese nationals. For the first time, the Centre has imposed a rigid 30-day timeframe, empowering border forces like the BSF and Assam Rifles with extraordinary authority under national security laws to act swiftly.

Officials have termed the order “unprecedented,” noting that it bypasses the traditionally slow and bureaucratic verification process that often took months. This marks a drastic acceleration in India’s approach to internal security and border management, and observers see it as both a governance challenge and a politically calculated move.

The government’s crackdown is already underway. In Gujarat, over 6,000 individuals identified as suspected Bangladeshi infiltrators are being scrutinized. Recently, 78 fishermen were forcibly sent back across the Bangladesh border via Satkhira. Similar operations are being conducted in the northeastern state of Tripura, which shares a long, porous border with Bangladesh.

Diplomatic fallout: Dhaka pushes back

The aggressive deportation measures have drawn strong objections from the Bangladesh government. Dhaka lodged formal protests with New Delhi after reports emerged of BSF personnel attempting to push suspected infiltrators across the Brahmanbaria border near Tripura. According to Bangladeshi authorities, local villagers intervened, preventing BSF from completing the operation.

Bangladesh’s stance is that many of those being sent back have not been verified as Bangladeshi citizens, and that India’s unilateral deportation efforts violate diplomatic protocol. The government in Dhaka has accused New Delhi of failing to consult or coordinate through proper bilateral channels.

This latest episode of tension adds to an already uneasy relationship between India and Bangladesh. The two neighbours have long-standing disputes over issues such as: Border killings by Indian security forces, unresolved water-sharing agreements, particularly over the Teesta River, trade imbalances and transit rights and maritime access.

The deportation campaign has only deepened suspicions in Dhaka, with many seeing it as a reflection of India’s shifting posture from cooperation to coercion.

Analysts argue that this crackdown is not solely about national security but also about political messaging. With assembly elections due in West Bengal and Assam—both border states with significant Muslim populations—the BJP has once again revived the issue of illegal immigration.

The BJP has repeatedly accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Congress of shielding infiltrators for vote-bank politics. By portraying itself as the only party committed to defending the country’s borders, the BJP is attempting to consolidate nationalist sentiment among voters.

Opposition questions Centre’s role in border management

The opposition has countered by questioning the Centre’s handling of border security. They point out that the BSF, which reports directly to the Union government, is responsible for preventing illegal entries. Any infiltration, therefore, is a reflection of central failure—not state negligence.

Critics also accuse the Modi government of undermining cooperative federalism by unilaterally imposing such directives without adequately involving state governments in the decision-making process.

The presence of Rohingya Muslims—who fled persecution in Myanmar and are now scattered across India—adds further complexity. India does not recognize the Rohingya as refugees, classifying them as illegal migrants. This position has drawn criticism from human rights advocates and added another layer of diplomatic sensitivity in India’s ties with both Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Balancing act: National security vs regional diplomacy

As India proceeds with its 30-day deportation campaign, it finds itself walking a diplomatic tightrope. The government’s effort to assert control over border security and illegal migration must now contend with the growing unease in Dhaka, and the risk of further destabilising already fragile regional ties.

The coming weeks will test New Delhi’s ability to strike a balance between hardline internal security policies, electoral imperatives, and the delicate framework of regional diplomacy in one of the world’s most volatile geopolitical arenas.

Bidhannagar Police Serves Notices to 15 Teachers as 21 Police Personnel Injured

The Bidhannagar North Police have issued summons to 15 teachers involved in the May 15 protest outside Bikash Bhavan, the headquarters of the state education department in Salt Lake, Kolkata. The teachers have been asked to appear before the police by May 21 for allegedly damaging public property and obstructing government officials during the violent confrontation. Failure to comply may result in arrests under Section 35(6) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), an officer confirmed.

Police Injuries and Clashes

According to the police, 21 personnel were injured in the clashes. Among them, officer Bhawna Das from the Barrackpore police force suffered serious injuries, including a fractured nose and broken teeth. “Our priority was to safely evacuate those trapped inside Bikash Bhavan,” the officer stated.

Police have filed a suo motu case and are open to investigating individual complaints from those affected during the protest. Forensic analysis is underway to determine whether injuries were caused by the police baton charge or by objects allegedly thrown by the protesters, including bricks and bottles.

Protests Over Job Termination

The teachers, protesting under the banner of Jogya Shikshak Shikshika Adhikar Mancha (JSSAM), have been staging a sit-in since the Supreme Court’s April verdict that annulled the appointments of over 25,000 teaching and non-teaching staff recruited through the 2016 West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) examinations.

Teachers Respond to Police Action

Chinmoy Mondol, a representative of the protesting teachers, confirmed to The Indian Express that the summons were sent via WhatsApp and said more are expected. “We are consulting our lawyers. Even if some of us received notices, we all will go to the police station. We have done nothing wrong. This is harassment,” he said.

Child Rights Commission Steps In

Sources indicate that the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights has taken cognizance of the presence of children at the protest site, where open classes were being held. The Commission suspects a possible violation of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, and has sought a report from the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate regarding the circumstances under which children were brought to the protest.

Protests Enter Fourth Day

Despite the police action, the sit-in continued for the fourth consecutive day on Sunday. Teachers were seen grading answer sheets while participating in the demonstration. Arpita, a teacher from Purba Bardhaman, said, “I have 120 answer papers to check. The court has allowed us to work until December 31, and I have a duty toward my students. I may be protesting, but I won’t neglect my responsibilities.”

Personal Struggles Add to the Protest’s Depth

Several protestors are also fighting personal battles. One such case is of Moumita Haldar, who suffered a brain stroke in 2022 after childbirth. Her husband, Prosenjit Das, has been attending the protests on her behalf. “Teaching is the only thing she can do now. We are here to seek justice for her,” he said.

Political Reaction Sparks Backlash

On Saturday, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim criticized the protest, claiming it was an attempt to seek media attention. “Only the Supreme Court can overturn its verdict. Protesting in front of Bikash Bhavan and blocking roads is not the solution—this is drama, not protest,” he remarked.

The mayor’s comments were met with strong rebuttal from protestors. “We’ve seen enough drama from politicians. If this were theatre, we wouldn’t be suffering like this on the streets. We are here for justice and dignity,” Mondol retorted.

What is Prostate Cancer? Joe Biden Diagnosed with That Has Spread to Bones

Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, which has metastasised to his bones, his office announced Sunday. The 82-year-old was reportedly experiencing urinary symptoms, prompting further medical evaluation that revealed a nodule on his prostate. Subsequent tests confirmed the presence of advanced prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 9, the highest risk category, indicating a severe and fast-growing type of cancer.

“This news is a reminder about the tragic impact of prostate cancer in the U.S.,” the American Cancer Society said in a statement. “Early detection is key, and we are concerned given the 5% year-over-year increase in diagnosis of men with more advanced disease. We can and must do more to prevent late-stage diagnosis and death from prostate cancer.”

While the diagnosis is serious, Biden’s medical team noted the cancer is hormone-sensitive, which makes it more manageable through specific treatments. Biden is currently reviewing treatment options with his physicians. Surgery is not expected to be a viable option, as the cancer has already spread beyond the prostate. Common treatment methods for such advanced cases include hormone therapy (androgen deprivation therapy), which lowers male hormone levels to slow cancer growth. Monitoring of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels will also play a critical role in assessing the effectiveness of treatment.

Biden Shares a Heartfelt Message

In a heartfelt message on X, Biden said: “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support,” accompanied by a photo of him and his wife, Jill Biden.

The Gleason grading system, which helps determine how likely the cancer is to spread, gave Biden’s cancer a score of 9 out of 10. According to the National Library of Medicine, this score means the cancer cells look very different from normal prostate cells and are likely to grow quickly. This type of cancer is also medically referred to as “poorly differentiated” or “undifferentiated.”

According to the National Institutes of Health, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among American men and the second leading cause of cancer death. It’s estimated that 313,780 new cases will be diagnosed in the U.S. this year, with around 35,770 deaths expected. Although prostate cancer generally grows slowly, more aggressive forms like Biden’s require immediate and intensive treatment.

Biden Receives Recovery Wishes

Reactions poured in from across the political spectrum and around the world following the announcement. Former President Barack Obama said on X: “Michelle and I are thinking of the entire Biden family. Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe, and I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace. We pray for a fast and full recovery.”

Donald Trump and Melania Trump also shared their support, with Trump writing: “We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, who succeeded Biden as the Democratic nominee in the last election, posted: “Joe is a fighter. I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.”

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also expressed her concern, saying: “I’m thinking of the Bidens as they take on cancer, a disease they’ve done so much to try to spare other families from. Wishing you a speedy, full recovery.”

PM Modi Takes the News to X

From abroad, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared on X: “Deeply concerned to hear about @JoeBiden’s health. Extend our best wishes to him for a quick and full recovery. Our thoughts are with Dr. Jill Biden and the family.”

Biden, who was previously treated for skin cancer and had non-melanoma lesions removed prior to his presidency, has long been active in cancer advocacy. After his son Beau Biden died of brain cancer in 2015, he launched the Cancer Moonshot Initiative, aimed at reducing cancer deaths and accelerating medical research.

Though the former president withdrew from the 2024 race following a widely criticized debate performance, he has continued to be a prominent voice in public health and policy. His previous comments from a 2022 speech about having cancer resurfaced recently, causing confusion. The White House had clarified then that Biden was referring to past cases of skin cancer, not the prostate cancer now diagnosed.

The NIH notes that prostate cancer has a five-year relative survival rate of approximately 98%, though this figure drops significantly in advanced, high-grade cases. The median age at diagnosis is 68, while the median age of death is 79.

Dr. Alan Tan, a leading expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre, remarked: “Gleason 9 is, by definition, aggressive, but you don’t know how bad it is unless you know what the PET scan looks like.”

Biden is currently resting at his residence in Wilmington, Delaware, surrounded by family and continuing consultations with his medical team.
