Computer Shiksha expands its Computer Literacy Program to 55 Aspirational Districts

Computer Shiksha expands its Computer Literacy Program to 55 Aspirational Districts
Gurgaon, India: There are 112 Aspirational districts recognized by the Government of India. These districts, historically lagging in socio-economic indicators, are now the focus of NGO – Computer Shiksha’s initiative of spreading computer literacy.
In several states like Uttar Pradesh (UP), Uttarakhand (UK), Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, Computer Shiksha has successfully started its program in every aspirational district, ensuring at least one school in each district benefits from the program. Currently operational in 55 aspirational districts, the goal is to reach all 112 districts within the next two years.
The NGO is inviting corporates who are looking to take their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) impact to these aspirational districts. The partnership will empower more underserved communities by providing essential computer literacy skills.
The non-profit organization, working towards enabling computer literacy among under-served communities provides free computer literacy for the under-served at schools where students are already regularly attending classes. Yoga can benefit Rheumatoid Arthritis patients: AIIMS Study

Yoga can benefit Rheumatoid Arthritis patients: AIIMS Study
Yoga can significantly improve the health of Rheumatoid Arthritis patients, shows a new study from AIIMS, New Delhi.
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints. It causes joint damage and pain and can affect other organ system as well like lung, heart and brain. Traditionally, yoga has been known for its physical and mental well-being benefits.
A collaborative study by Lab for Molecular Reproduction and Genetics, Anatomy Dept, and Dept of Rheumatology AIIMS, ND, supported by DST, explored the effects of yoga at a cellular and molecular level in RA patients and how yoga may benefit RA patients beyond just pain relief.
It has been discovered that yoga lowers inflammation by controlling cellular damage and oxidative stress. It balances pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, raises endorphin levels, and reduces cortisol and CRP levels and maintains melatonin rhythms. This facilitates the disruption of the inflammatory and hyperactive immune system cycle.
At a molecular level, by boosting the activity of the telomerase enzyme and genes involved in DNA repair and cell cycle regulation, it slows down the aging process of cells. Additionally, yoga improves mitochondrial function, which guards against telomere attrition and DNA damage by enhancing energy metabolism and lowering oxidative stress.
A study by Dr Rima Dada and her team at the Lab for Molecular Reproduction and Genetics, Anatomy Dept, AIIMS, supported by DST, documented reduced pain perception, improved joint mobility, decreased disability, and enhanced overall quality of life for patients performing yoga. These benefits were attributed to yoga’s ability to establish immunological tolerance and molecular remission.
The study published in Scientific Reports, 2023 https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-023-42231-w shows that yoga may help manage stress, a known trigger for RA symptoms. By lowering stress hormones like cortisol, yoga may indirectly reduce inflammation, may improve mitochondrial function, which can impact energy production and cellular health and reduce severity of comorbid depression by increased levels of 𝛽-endorphin, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), melatonin, and sirtuin-1 (SIRT-1).Yoga promotes neuroplasticity and thus aids in better coping strategies and reduces severity of comorbid depression.
This research provides evidence for the potential of yoga as a complementary therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis patients. Yoga may not only manage symptoms like pain and stiffness but could also contribute to disease control and improved quality of life. Unlike drugs, yoga has no side effects and offers a cost-effective, natural alternative for managing severe autoimmune conditions.

Digital Economy causing Environmental Damage: UN

Bitcoin-Digital-Economy.jpg
The United Nations has warned that the rapid digitalisation of the global economy is costing the environment significantly. This is the result of extensive usage of water and energy bu the data centres that are used to power AI.
The UN trade and Development Agency UNCTAD stated in a report that while digitalisation is essential to fuel global economic growth, its environmental repercussions are becoming “increasingly severe”. The agency has called for adopting sustainable strategies in order to counter the growing environmental toll, especially in developing countries.
“Digitalisation continues to move at warp speed, transforming lives and livelihoods. At the same time, unregulated digitalisation risks leaving people behind and exacerbating environmental and climate challenges,” said UN chief Antonio Guterres in the report.
He highlighted that as the reliance on digital tools increases, so does the impact on the environment, in form of depleting raw materials, consumption of water and energy, spewing air pollution and generating waste.
“These impacts are worsened by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence,” he added.

Limited Data Available

Data available on how rapidly-evolving AI is affecting the environment is limited. Therefore, UNCTAD chief Rebeca Grynspan has urged the world’s biggest tech companies to lead the way by producing standardised data.
In response, Google has recently reported that there has been a 48 per cent increase in its greenhouse gas emissions over the five years to 2023. This is largely due to powering data centres that support AI operations. Similarly, Microsoft’s latest sustainability report has showed that there is a 29 per cent increase in greenhouse gas emissions in the last year as compared to 2020. Both Google and Microsoft have made a commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030.
In the Digital Economy Report 2024 published by UNCTAD, there are several examples of the digital economy’s impact on the environment. The report has stated that the information and communications technology sector has cause 0.69 to 1.6 gigaton of carbon dioxide emissions in 2020. This represents 1.5 to 3.2 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, comparable to the emissions from air transport or shipping.
The report has noted that in order to produce a two-kilogram computer there is a requirement of approximately 800 kilograms of raw materials.
According to UNCTAD, the demand for critical minerals like graphite, lithium, and cobalt could increase by 500 per cent by the year 2050.
It was also found that data centres had consumed 460 terawatt hours of electricity in 2022. This consumption is expected to double by 2026. The report has highlighted that in Ireland, data centre electricity use has more than quadrupled between 2015 and 2022. It now accounts for 18 per cent of the country’s total electricity consumption, and could rise to 28 per cent by 2031.

Bitcoin uses more energy than Belgium

The global energy consumption of mining bitcoin, the most prominent cryptocurrency, has increased about 34 times between 2015 and 2023 to reach an approximately 121 TWh. This puts the energy usage for bitcoin mining ahead of energy consumption of entire countries like Belgium and Finland.
Digitalisation is key to driving economic growth across the globe. This makes its progress essential. However, there is a need for a more sustainable approach considering the environmental impact it has.
