India Faces Steep Blood Cancer Mortality Rates with over 70,000 Annual Deaths: Report
Delhi, India: With over 70,000 annual deaths stemming from blood cancer, India experiences a huge burden of mortality rates from this disease. As per the Globocan 2022 report, the country is also currently seeing a surge in the number of blood cancer cases getting diagnosed which tolls at a whopping 1,20,000+ in contrast to the previous report which showed an incidence rate of 1,00,000. The main challenge being faced by these patients in the lack of potential blood stem cell donors in India.
Blood cancers and disorders constitute conditions impacting the blood, bone marrow, or lymphatic system. Common blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma involve abnormal cell growth in blood or lymph tissues. Leukemia, which is the most common type of blood cancer in India, tops the charts of incidence rates with 49883 annual cases, followed closely by Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma which affects 39736 Indians annually, while 9611 cases are accounted for Hodgkin Lymphoma every year. Out of the total cases of blood cancers in India, 30,000 are those seen in children. To increase the chances for more patients to find a matching donor for the stem cell transplant, it is indisputable for more people to come forward and register themselves as blood stem cell donors.
Patrick Paul, CEO, DKMS BMST Foundation India says, “Only 0.09% of the Indian population is registered as potential stem cell donors out of whom over 1,30,000 are registered with DKMS. This statistic strikes quite a contrast to the global one where over 42 Million people are registered as blood stem cell donors worldwide. Over 70% of the patients diagnosed with blood cancer or blood disorder in India are unable to find a match within their families and urgently need a matching unrelated donor. DKMS has a mission to give such patients a second chance at life by registering potential stem cell donors from across India and it has helped 1,15,000 donors worldwide to donate their blood stem cells and save those in need, while this number stands at just 130 with India.”
Despite advancements in medical science improving outcomes for blood cancer and blood disorder patients, a significant challenge persists the availability of Human Leukocyte Antigen or tissue type (HLA)-matched stem cell donors. An HLA match is vital for a successful stem cell transplant, and the best chances of finding a match are among individuals of the same ethnicity. However, the current pool of potential stem cell donors is inadequate to meet the needs of all patients, disproportionately impacting Indian patients due to limited donor diversity.
Dr. Sunil Bhat, Director & Clinical Lead, Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Blood & Marrow Transplantation, Narayana Health says, “A bigger pool of Indian-origin donors in registries means more patients battling blood cancer and blood disorders like Thalassemia and Aplastic Anemia can be helped by stem cell transplants. Finding a well-matched donor significantly improves the transplant outcome. Success rates can vary depending on individual factors like the patient’s health and the specifics of their disease, but if the transplant is performed at the optimal time, there’s a 60-70% chance of a complete cure. This means many patients can return to near-normal lives just a year after the transplant.”
To register as a potential stem cell donor, you must be a healthy Indian adult between 18 and 55. When you are ready to register, all you need to do is complete a consent form and swab the inside of your cheeks to collect your tissue cells. Your tissue sample is then sent to the lab to be analyzed for your HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) and listed anonymously on the international search platform for matching stem cell donors.

CSR Project Nari Shakti expanded to Madurai
Madurai, India: Women play a pivotal role in India’s economy, yet they lead only 13.7% of enterprises[2]despite comprising 66% of the population. This indicates persistent barriers despite their significant contributions. To address the formidable challenges faced by marginalised women, Amway India, a leading company supporting Health and Wellbeing, in collaboration with the Yellow Bag Foundation, expands its transformative Project Nari Shakti – Women Livelihood Program – to Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
This initiative aims to uplift the lives of underprivileged women by providing them with essential vocational skills, entrepreneurship training, and health and wellbeing education. This holistic approach empowers them to achieve socio-economic independence, make informed health choices, and foster personal growth. By promoting women’s empowerment, Amway India is not only improving individual lives but also creating a foundation for healthier families and communities, which aligns with the company’s vision of helping people live better, healthier lives.
Talking about the program, Rajneesh Chopra, Managing Director, Amway India, said, “At Amway India, we firmly believe that empowering women is not only a moral imperative but also crucial for creating a more inclusive society. Through Project Nari Shakti, we aim to empower women by equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to pursue sustainable livelihoods. By fostering their economic independence, we aspire to inspire them to lead empowered lives, thereby contributing to their families’ and communities’ wellbeing. This program has positively impacted over 3,000 women so far, and we are delighted to launch it in Madurai to upskill women from economically disadvantaged communities. We are committed to providing comprehensive support, ensuring these women have the tools and resources necessary to compete in today’s economy and make meaningful contributions to society.
Addressing the launch, Mr. Gowri Gopinath, Director, YellowBag Foundation said, “Women are the backbone of our economy, but often struggle to achieve financial independence. Since 2019, the YellowBag Foundation has helped over 500 women gain skills and work opportunities. We are proud to collaborate with Amway India on Project Nari Shakti – Women Livelihood Program, which aims to tackle these challenges head-on. The 10-month program is divided into 10 batches spread over two months. It combines theory, practical skills, nutrition education, entrepreneurship training, and a 30-hour industry internship. By providing underprivileged women in Madurai with essential vocational skills and entrepreneurship training, we strive to empower them to lead independent, successful lives and create a world where all women can thrive.”
Project Nari Shakti addresses societal challenges faced by women in Madurai, stemming from gaps in education and entrenched societal norms. Many women, despite their aspirations to contribute to their family income, find themselves confined to domestic roles, deprived of opportunities to contribute economically to society. Project Nari Shakti seeks to break these barriers, offering training in fields such as beauty and wellness, fashion designing, entrepreneurship, and basic nutrition. The initial phase targets 100 low-income women, 18-45 years old, with family income below Rs. 2 lakhs annually. Classes will be held at vocational centres along Madurai’s Vaigai riverside, in Madichiyam, Meenambalpuram, and Andaalpuram, ensuring accessibility for participants.
The Nari Shakti program advocates women empowerment by helping less-privileged women develop skills and capabilities through upskilling and training. It aims to provide sustainable livelihood options, enabling women to either start their own businesses or secure employment. Through strategic partnerships with NGOs such as Deepalaya, SRF Foundation, Paryas Society, and Mukti Rehabilitation Center, Amway India has significantly expanded the program’s reach. This initiative has delivered tangible benefits to over 35,000 individuals, including more than 3,000 women as direct beneficiaries, across diverse regions such as Delhi, Hamirpur (Uttar Pradesh), Sohna (Haryana), Kolkata (West Bengal), and Chennai (Tamil Nadu) since its inception in 2020.
Amway India operates a manufacturing plant in Nilakottai, approximately 35 km from Madurai. In this area, the company runs the Village Healthcare project through five telemedicine centres in partnership with Meenakshi Mission Hospital, Madurai. These centres aim to provide quality healthcare services to the rural community residing in and around the Amway Manufacturing plant, offering free consultations, pathological tests, and medicines, benefiting around 35,000 villagers annually.

CSR: Karnataka Minister MB Patil attends Mamadapur Lake Rejuvenation Project ceremony
Karnataka, India: In a significant step towards environmental restoration, MB Patil, Minister for Commerce & Industries and Infrastructure, Govt of Karnataka, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony of the Mamadapur Lake Rejuvenation Project today.
This initiative by the Sehgal Foundation with support from HCCB, one of India’s leading FMCG companies, aims to restore the historically important Mamadapur Lake, which has been central to the community and ecosystem since the 16th century. Once complete, the rejuvenated lake will benefit around 30,000 people from the local community through improved water security, biodiversity conservation, and economic opportunities.
Mamadapur Lake, originally built during the Adil Shahi period, once spanned a maximum storage height of approximately 7.6 meters with a submergence area of 864 acres and an irrigated command area of about 674 acres. Recent assessments have shown a significant reduction in its capacity due to sediment accumulation, affecting both its ecological balance and water availability.
The rejuvenated Mamadapur Lake will not only address ecological challenges but also bring numerous benefits to the local community. By increasing the water capacity through de-silting, strengthening bunds, and creating additional water control structures, the project would significantly improve the groundwater level of the surrounding villages through water recharge. This in turn would ensure a reliable water supply for domestic and irrigation purposes, enhancing agricultural productivity and food security.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, MB Patil, Minister for Commerce & Industries and Infrastructure, Govt of Karnataka, said, “Today’s groundbreaking ceremony not only marks the beginning of the restoration of Mamadapur Lake but also represents our government’s efforts to enhance our natural resources and the quality of life for our people. This project aligns with our vision to preserve our environmental heritage and ensure water security for generations to come.”
“We are glad to participate in the restoration of Mamadapur Lake, a vital resource for the local community. This project not only aims to rejuvenate the lake but also to foster long-term environmental stewardship and community engagement.” said Himanshu Priyadarshi, Chief Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability Officer at HCCB.
Restoration efforts will also promote local biodiversity, contributing to a healthier ecosystem and improved groundwater levels, essential for the community’s needs. The addition of new park facilities and public areas will provide spaces for recreation and leisure, enhancing community well-being. Moreover, the project will foster a culture of sustainability through community engagement and environmental education, while the enhanced aesthetic and recreational features of the lake will attract tourists, creating economic opportunities through ecotourism.
Among others present on the occasion were Shri T Bhoobalan, District Commissioner, Vijayapura, Shri Rishikesh Sonawane Bhagawan, Superintendent of Police, Vijayapura, and Shri Rishi Anand, Chief Executive Officer, Zilla Parishad. Vijayapura.
