Maha Kumbh: 13 FIRs against 140 Social Media Handles for Spreading False Information

Maha Kumbh: 13 FIRs against 140 Social Media Handles for Spreading False Information
A total of 13 FIRs have been made against 140 social media profiles for distributing inaccurate information about the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. The Uttar Pradesh Police took action after social media users started sharing a video about 300 train fatalities during Maha Kumbh travel. Police investigation has revealed this viral video showed an incident that occurred in Bangladesh in 2022.
The Maha Kumbh Mela has been drawing a huge number of devotees daily to the Triveni Sangam despite false information reports according to DIG Vaibhav Krishna who noted the arrival of over 1 crore pilgrims. “We have registered FIRs against those responsible for spreading fake news and are taking every necessary step to ensure the festival runs smoothly,” he stated.

Crowd Control Measures in Place for Maha Shivratri

As the final day of the Maha Kumbh approaches, significant arrangements have been made for the Maha Shivratri festival, which is expected to attract even larger crowds. Authorities have ensured that there will be no traffic disruptions in the area, with DIG Krishna affirming, “We are fully prepared to handle the crowd, regardless of how massive it may be.”
The police department has concentrated its efforts on managing unruly crowds while combating misinformation at significant locations, particularly the Ayodhya Dham Railway Station. The high number of pilgrims at the station has led Deputy Superintendent of Police Yashwant Singh to deploy over 350 officers for crowd control. Safety protocols including barricades and holding areas are in use and passengers can access the platforms only when trains are set to depart.

Over 62 Crore Footfalls Recorded at Maha Kumbh

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that more than 62 crore devotees have visited the Mela since its commencement. To control the large number of visiting pilgrims throughout the event the state government has passed detailed safety measures to guarantee incident-free operations.
Authorities remain alert against misinformation and continue to manage the logistics of the massive festival as millions of pilgrims make their way to Prayagraj to take part in the sacred dip.

CSR Initiative Ensures Vision Care to Central Jail Inmates in Delhi

CSR Initiative Ensures Vision Care to Central Jail Inmates in Delhi
New Delhi, India: ENTOD Pharmaceuticals, in collaboration with Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) & Safdarjung Hospital, organised an eye care camp on January 21 at the Central Jail in Delhi providing essential vision screenings and treatment to over 325 inmates and staff members. The initiative aimed to address common eye conditions through refraction tests, spectacle prescriptions, free medication distribution, and awareness sessions on ophthalmic hygiene and preventive eye care.
With India home to nearly 25% of the world’s visually impaired population, regular eye checkups are critical to early detection and treatment. Over 62 million Indians live with vision impairment, and 13% suffer from complete blindness. Cataracts remain the leading cause, accounting for 62.6% of blindness, followed by refractive errors and glaucoma. Additionally, 21 million diabetics in India experience vision issues, with 2.4 million suffering from blindness due to diabetic retinopathy. Timely interventions can help curb preventable blindness and ensure better vision health for all.
At the Central Jail camp, 235 individuals underwent refraction tests, leading to 220 prescriptions for corrective eyewear. 14 patients were identified for cataract surgery, while 275 received free medicines and eye drops. The camp also included eye donation counseling and educational sessions led by experts from VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital.
Mr. Nikkhil K Masurkar, CEO of ENTOD Pharmaceuticals, emphasised the importance of accessible vision care, stating, “Millions across India continue to struggle with avoidable blindness due to a lack of timely checkups. Eye health should not be an afterthought, it must be a priority. Regular screenings can detect conditions before they escalate, ensuring timely treatment. At ENTOD, we believe that quality eye care should be available to all, including those in institutional settings. This initiative with VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital aligns with our commitment to ensuring eye health reaches underserved communities. Our goal is to extend such outreach programmes to many more in need.”
Dr. Pankaj Ranjan CMO at Safdarjang Hospital echoing the importance of preventive care commented, “Eye diseases often progress silently, making regular checkups essential. Cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy can cause irreversible damage if left undiagnosed. The number of inmates identified for cataract surgery in this camp highlights the need for routine screenings across all sections of society. Vision loss is more than a medical condition, it impacts independence and quality of life. Early intervention can prevent unnecessary blindness and improve well-being.”
The success of this eye care camp reflects the impact of teamwork in healthcare. With continued support from medical institutions and pharmaceutical partners, such initiatives can bridge the gap in vision care for marginalised communities.

Mumbai reported 374 deaths in 351 road accidents in 2023: Report

Mumbai reported 374 deaths in 351 road accidents in 2023: Report
Hit-and-run incidents comprise 38 per cent of all the fatal crashes on the roads of Mumbai in 2023, reveals a latest report by the traffic police. The report offers an in-depth analysis of the accidents data of that year. As per the report, majority of the victims in these accidents were pedestrians, who comprise 54 per cent, followed by people travelling by two-wheelers and auto rickshaws. Youths belonging to the 20-29 years age group who were motorcyclists form a majority of those who succumbed to road accidents.
The report further reveals that Mumbai reported 374 deaths in 351 road accidents in 2023, marking a 39 per cent decrease since 2015. Among those deaths, two and three-wheeler occupants comprised 48 per cent and pedestrians 40 per cent, reveals the report published recently by the Mumbai Traffic Police along with the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety.
Most of the people who have lost their lives are men comprising 82 per cent, with those in the 20-39 years age group making up the largest number of fatalities among the males at 47 per cent, as per the report.

Accident-prone roads of Mumbai

A lot of pedestrian deaths occurred at the intersection of the Sion-Panvel Highway, Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road, and Worli seaface junction. The intersection of the Western Express Highway, Sion-Bandra Link Road and Baiganwadi signal junction witnessed most of the deaths and injuries.
Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marg and Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road registered most deaths and injuries per kilometre. There were 10 deaths per kilometre in 2023 on those roads, according to the report.

Safety measures to avoid accidents

The report has mentioned certain safety measures to avoid accidents. These include reducing speed limits, enhancing enforcement of clasped motorcycle helmets, seat belts, creating more walkable streets, safer pedestrian and infrastructure for bicycle riders.

Telangana: Rescue Operation Intensifies For 8 Workers Trapped in Tunnel Collapse

Telangana: Rescue Operation Intensifies For 8 Workers Trapped in Tunnel Collapse
Rescue operation for eight workers trapped in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel collapse continues at full intensity. On Saturday a tunnel collapsed at the 14 km mark near Domalapenta in Nagarkurnool district. Eight workers including four labourers and four construction employees continue to stay trapped inside the collapsed tunnel.

Chances of Survival Slim

Telangana Minister J Krishna Rao is leading a rescue operation while facing major obstacles from debris accumulation and flooding inside the tunnel. The workers trapped in the tunnel consist of engineers and operators who are trapped in a section cut off by extensive muck accumulation. “The conditions are dire, with muck and water making progress extremely difficult. Rescuers are navigating the tunnel using rubber tubes and wooden planks to bypass the debris,” said Minister Krishna Rao. He noted that the chances of survival are slim, but rescue teams are pushing forward with relentless efforts.
The rescue operation receives support from multiple organisations which include the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Indian Army and Navy units. The rescue teams have travelled 13.5 kilometers into the tunnel where they face a challenge from a 200-meter debris-filled section. Operations to find trapped workers remain challenging because low-lying sections from 11 km to 13 km maintain their waterlogged condition.

Advanced Equipment Deployed to Survey Tunnel

Unstable sections in the tunnel pose ongoing dangers to the rescue operation because shifting boulders present risks of resulting tunnel collapses. The risks of unstable conditions demanded advanced equipment such as robotic and endoscopic cameras for tunnel interior inspection. The removal of water accumulation from the site is currently happening together with operations to de-water the area so that additional digging can proceed.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has been actively monitoring the situation and receiving regular updates from rescue teams. “We are closely observing every development and are ensuring that all available resources are used to expedite the operation,” said the Chief Minister.
Assisting in the operation are the Indian Army’s Engineer Task Force and a group of rat miners who previously helped with similar rescue efforts in Uttarakhand. Despite the grim outlook, the rescue teams continue to work around the clock in hopes of bringing the trapped workers to safety.

Families of Trapped Workers Anxiously Await Updates

The trapped workers’ families, especially those from Jharkhand, have been anxiously waiting for updates. Jharkhand’s Health Minister, Irfan Ansari, has been in constant contact with Telangana officials to track the progress of the rescue.
While the situation remains critical, the authorities continue to push forward, focusing on clearing the debris and water to reach the trapped workers as quickly as possible. The difficult conditions inside the tunnel make this a race against time.

E-Cigarette

Vaping

India-UK to Resume FTA Negotiations after a Gap of Eight Months

India-UK to Resume FTA Negotiations after a Gap of Eight Months
India and the UK will resume negotiations on a free trade agreement FTA on Monday after a gap of eight months. The 15th round of negotiations, between the UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, will occur under the shadow of Trump’s new tariffs that have led the world into uncertainty.
The FTA negotiations between the two nations were paused in May 2024, because of the general elections in both countries. However, because of the Trump tarrifs, an urgency for the negotiations can be felt. The subject of tariffs that the US is expected to impose on the countries with which it has a trade deficit can also be a point of discussion in the bilateral meeting between Goyal and Reynolds.

The Indian Side

India has brought down import duties on cars, motorcycles and select urban whiskey produced in the US. These lower duties on car insurance address some of the key demands of the UK. However, India might not be ready to sign the latest import duties or FDI limits in the FTA unless it gets anything in return from the UK, which is the 16th biggest trading partner for India.
If these changes become permanent, the companies in the UK will continue to enjoy concessions in the Indian industry ecosystem. However, India should see clarity on how the carbon tax, that the UK will collect from January 2027, will be neutralised after the FTA.
The negotiations on the India-UK FTA initially began in January 2022 and dealt with 26 chapters of policy areas. The majority of these chapters have been closed or are in the advanced stage. The 15th round of negotiation which is to be held between the two countries will try to bring conclusively to the three-year-long FTA process.

Banned Jamaat-e-Islami to Launch New Political Front to Contest Elections

Banned Jamaat-e-Islami to Launch New Political Front to Contest Elections
After the Jammu and Kashmir-based outfit Jamaat-e-Islami remains banned, a small fraction of the group has decided to launch a new political front. JeI contested the assembly elections in the union territory last year, but the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) extended the ban against the political outfit, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) 1967, for another five years in February last year. JEI was first declared as an unlawful association in February 2019.

The New Political Front

The new front was unofficially introduced on Sunday at a convention in South Kashmir’s Kulgam, the place where the Jamaat organised its first big political rally in three decades during last year’s assembly election campaign.  This new fraction will be called Justice and Development Front (JDF) and will be officially announced in Srinagar.
“Since the Jamaat is a banned organisation, we have decided to set up a separate political front that will work only in the political arena. Jamaat is a socio-religious political outfit. When the ban is lifted, Jamaat will work on social and religious fronts while the JDF will work on the political front,” said Shamim Ahmad Thoker, the election in charge of the Jamaat fraction that fought assembly polls.
Thoker is set to become the President of the new political front while Abdul Rahman Shalla, the Jamaat’s Baramulla candidate, will become the vice president. The Kulgam candidate of the fraction, Sayar Ahmad Reshi, will become the general secretary.
The new front leadership structure will not include any Jamaat’s main leadership.

AAP’s Atishi to Become First Female Leader of Opposition of Delhi

AAP’s Atishi to Become First Female Leader of Opposition of Delhi
As Delhi proceeds to get its fourth female chief minister, Rekha Gupta, the former Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi is set to lead the opposition in the assembly. The party picked her name amongst the 22 MLAs who won the February 5 polls from various constituencies in Delhi. The decision came out of the party leaders’ meeting held on Sunday, which elected the first-ever woman to hold the position of the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi assembly.

Atishi Elected Unopposed

The first session of the new assembly will begin today. AAP Delhi convenor Gopal Rai, who is also amongst the 22 successful MLAs, announced at a press conference on Sunday that Atishi’s name was proposed by Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha and was seconded by Kondli MLA Kuldeep Kumar and Tilak Nagar MLA Jarnail Singh. “Atishi was elected unopposed,” said Rai in a press conference.
“I thank Kejriwal and the MLAs for having faith in me. The people of Delhi have decided that we will sit in the opposition this time. There are two main things we will focus on, first is to ensure the promises made by the BJP are fulfilled, especially its promise to give ₹2500 per month to the Women of Delhi…..The second is to ensure, that the work that the AAP government started, does not stop or discontinue,” said Atishi.

Pakistan- Bangladesh to Resume Direct Trade for the First Time after 1971

Pakistan- Bangladesh to Resume Direct Trade for the First Time after 1971
Pakistan and Bangladesh resumed direct trade for the first time after the separation of the two countries post the Bangladesh liberation war between East and West Pakistan (now, Bangladesh and Pakistan, respectively) in 1971.
The trade agreement was finalised in the early days of February when Bangladesh agreed to purchase 50,000 tonnes of Pakistani rice from the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP). The first government-approved cargo was departed from Port Qasim, Pakistan.

Trade After War

A Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) vessel will carry government cargo of 25,000 tonnes of rice to the Bangladeshi dock. The shipment will be completed in two phases, with the remaining half of Pakistani rice to be dispatched in early March.
This marks a significant milestone in maritime trade relations between the two countries who once fought a war.
After attaining independence from Pakistan in 1971, the transportation of goods via official trade relations could never be restored between the two states, until now. Under the new deal finalised in February, Bangladesh will import rice from Pakistan. This development will also foster positive economic cooperation and establishment of trade channels within Southeast Asia.
