BBA Student’s Body Recovered 50 Hours After Car Fell into SYL Canal in Kurukshetra

The CSR Journal Magazine

The body of Varun Singla, a BBA student who went missing after his car fell into the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal, was recovered on Monday, nearly 50 hours after the incident. The 21-year-old’s body was found trapped among underwater shrubs just a short distance from the accident site.

Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and experienced divers had been carrying out the search operation since the car plunged into the canal on the afternoon of 3 February.

Vehicle Plunged into Canal with Two Occupants

The incident occurred when Varun Singla was travelling in a car with a friend, identified as Arushi, near the SYL canal in Kurukshetra district. Eyewitness accounts and local authorities confirmed that the vehicle veered off course and fell into the water, leading to an intensive rescue and recovery effort.

Arushi managed to survive the incident, while Varun went missing in the canal’s strong currents. Following the accident, police began a search operation that extended across several kilometres of the waterway.

Body Found Near Site of Accident

After more than two days of continuous search operations, divers located Varun’s body entangled in submerged vegetation in the canal. The body was recovered and later handed over to the local police, who took it into custody and sent it for post-mortem examination at Lok Nayak Jayaprakash (LNJP) Hospital.

His remains were removed from the water under the supervision of police officers and members of the disaster response team. Officials confirmed that the recovery site was close to where the vehicle initially entered the canal.

Allegations Lead to Murder Case

Following the incident, Arushi’s family lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that Varun had deliberately driven the car into the canal. Based on their statement, local law enforcement registered a case of murder against him under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Though investigations are ongoing, the police have taken Arushi’s version of events into account and initiated legal proceedings accordingly.

Family Devastated by Loss

Varun Singla was the only son of his parents, who are reportedly devastated by the incident. The sudden loss has left the family in deep grief, and relatives gathered at the hospital where the body was taken for post-mortem.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the complete circumstances surrounding the incident. Further action will be taken based on the post-mortem report and statements from involved parties
