The body of a 50-year-old Hindu man was discovered inside a drum floating in water near a sluice gate in the Begunbari area of Mymensingh, Bangladesh, prompting police to suspect foul play. The victim was identified as Niranjan Chandra Sutradhar, who operated a jewellery shop in the region. On Wednesday, local residents alerted authorities after spotting the plastic drum in the water, leading to the recovery of the body.

Police investigations revealed that a token, issued by the Mymensingh Hindu Cooperative Credit Union Limited, was found in the pocket of Sutradhar’s trousers. This token assisted officers in tracing the man’s identity, which was subsequently confirmed by his family after they were contacted.

Niranjan’s body was positively identified by his wife, Sumita Rani Sutradhar, and their son, Joy Sutradhar. The identification process was facilitated by the cooperative credit union, as noted by police authorities.

Details on the Investigation

Sub-Inspector Ruhul Amin of the Kotwali Model Police Station indicated that the token was instrumental in establishing the victim’s identity, but the investigation has yet to determine the circumstances surrounding his death. As of Friday morning, there have been no arrests made in connection with this case.

Examination of the body revealed injury marks, suggesting that Niranjan may have been killed prior to being placed inside the drum and disposed of in the water. The police have stated that they are in the early stages of the investigation and are working to ascertain both the identity of the assailant and the motive behind the alleged murder.

Niranjan had been reported missing since September 20, when he left his home in the Stadium area. Initially, his family believed he would return as he had previously stayed away for several days. Consequently, they did not file a general diary immediately following his disappearance. A nephew reportedly spotted him in the vicinity the day after he went missing.
