Assam State Zoo Undergoing Redevelopment to Become Premier Wildlife Destination

The CSR Journal Magazine

Assam’s Environment and Forest Minister, Jayanta Mallabaruah, visited the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden on October 2, 2026, to assess the current redevelopment efforts. His inspection coincided with the opening of Wildlife Week 2026, an initiative focused on wildlife conservation and raising awareness regarding the importance of protecting natural habitats. During his visit, he reviewed the various construction and infrastructural improvements being made under the direction of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Minister Mallabaruah noted that these enhancements aim to transform the zoo into a leading wildlife destination with modern amenities for visitors. Emphasising the balance between development and the preservation of the zoo’s natural surroundings, he expressed optimism about the project’s impact on the facility’s profile, both nationally and internationally.

Plans for New Facilities and Attractions

The redevelopment plans for the Assam State Zoo include the construction of significant new facilities, such as an expansive bird aviary that could potentially rank among the largest in the world. Minister Mallabaruah highlighted that this aviary would not only serve as an attraction for visitors but also offer unique experiences for wildlife enthusiasts. By incorporating avian species from various regions, the zoo aims to promote biodiversity and wildlife appreciation.

Additionally, the project includes the introduction of a toy train facility designed to enhance visitor experience and facilitate exploration of the extensive zoo grounds. This feature aims to provide a convenient means of accessing different areas, making it easier for families and tourists to enjoy what the zoo has to offer. Mallabaruah confirmed that the construction activities are on track, with visible changes expected over the coming months, although the overall project is projected to take longer to complete fully.

The estimated budget for the complete redevelopment stands at approximately Rs 340 crore. The Minister mentioned that Chief Minister Biswa Sarma has advised including necessary additions to ensure the project’s objectives are met. Further insights will be drawn from visits by Forest Department officials to other zoological parks in cities like Bengaluru and Chennai, where they sought to benchmark best practices for implementation in Assam.

Celebration of Wildlife Week and Community Engagement

The minister’s visit also aligned with the activities of Wildlife Week 2026, which is dedicated to promoting conservation awareness among the public. As part of the celebrations, events included Hasti Pujan, a ceremonial worship of elephants, as well as participation from Forest Department officials in a biking rally. The day’s schedule featured a programme for naming a giraffe, designed to engage visitors and foster a connection with the animals.

Wildlife Week will run until October 6, culminating in a significant event at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, where the week’s activities will be formally concluded. This diverse range of events aims to engage the public in wildlife conservation efforts while educating them about the importance of preserving biodiversity. The ongoing efforts at the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden are set to enhance its role as a wildlife and tourism hub, focusing on a balance of modern facilities and ecological preservation.
