AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey Named in Harassment Complaint by Valanka Alemao

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kalyan Chaubey, the president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), faces serious allegations of harassment made by Valanka Alemao, a senior female official and member of the AIFF Executive Committee. The accusations were disclosed in a formal letter following an Executive Committee meeting held in New Delhi on March 29. Alemao detailed her experiences during this meeting, claiming she was subjected to inappropriate behavior by senior officials.

Details of the Incident

During the Executive Committee gathering at the Football House, Alemao reported feeling “heckled and harassed” by Chaubey along with other officials. This incident has raised significant concerns regarding the governance and conduct protocols within Indian football. Notably, Alemao had recently voiced strong objections related to administrative issues that emerged during India’s Women’s Asian Cup campaign in Australia.

Formal Complaint Submitted

Alemao’s allegations were outlined in a letter directed to other Executive Committee members, where she characterized Chaubey’s behavior as entirely unacceptable. In her correspondence, she stated, “I wish to place on record the entirely disgusting behaviour of the AIFF President Mr. Kalyan Chaubey, Vice President Mr. N.A. Haris, and Deputy Secretary General M. Satyanarayan.” She articulated feeling “deeply prejudiced,” contending that several attempts were made by Chaubey to silence her. She further claimed that his comments were both unnecessary and disrespectful, asserting that his demeanor was intended to intimidate her during the course of their discussions.

Background of the Dispute

The tension between Chaubey and Alemao appears to be rooted in broader administrative disagreements within the federation. Earlier, Alemao had approached Chaubey seeking accountability regarding what she described as numerous blunders related to the Women’s Asian Cup, particularly issues concerning team management and logistical arrangements. She expressed dissatisfaction with the apparent lack of consultation involving essential bodies such as the Executive Committee and the Women’s Committee when making significant decisions.

Implications for AIFF Governance

The latest accusations signify a breakdown in communication among top officials, with Alemao alleging that critical decision-making processes are being centralized without appropriate input from all relevant parties. This incident during the Executive Committee meeting has highlighted existing tensions within the organization. The controversy also raises ongoing questions about governance practices in Indian football, especially during a period when the sport is grappling with various structural and administrative challenges.
