Ahmedabad Police Arrest Syrian National in Fake Gaza Fundraising Scam

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Ahmedabad Crime Branch has apprehended a Syrian man, Ali Meghat Al-Azhar, accused of running a fraudulent scheme by collecting money from mosques across Gujarat under the pretext of helping Gaza war victims. Investigations revealed the funds were instead diverted to finance the gang’s extravagant lifestyle.

Ali Meghat Al-Azhar, who entered India on a tourist visa, admitted during police questioning that the money raised was spent on luxury hotels, branded clothing, and high-end gadgets. The police have labeled this activity as a significant threat to the country’s internal security. “Such activities can pose a threat to the country’s internal security,” the Crime Branch stated.

Three Accomplices of Syrian Fundraising Gang Still on the Run in India

Authorities said Al-Azhar worked alongside at least three accomplices who are still at large. These individuals reportedly entered India on tourist visas in violation of visa regulations. The Crime Branch is actively investigating their identities and movements, including verifying the authenticity of seized passports belonging to the suspects.

The modus operandi involved the gang members posing as victims of the Gaza conflict and visiting mosques to solicit donations. To add credibility, Al-Azhar reportedly used scars from past injuries and pretended to speak only Arabic. These tactics helped gain sympathy and deceive donors.

Crime Branch Moves to Blacklist and Deport Syrian

In the aftermath of his arrest, the Crime Branch has initiated steps to blacklist Al-Azhar and initiate deportation proceedings. Authorities are also examining the broader purpose behind the fundraising, suspecting misuse of charity collections.

This incident arises amid escalating humanitarian concerns in Gaza, where a UN-backed organisation has declared famine affecting over half a million people. The ongoing crisis underscores the importance of vigilance against fraudulent fundraising exploiting genuine humanitarian needs.
