After Delhi and Bihar barely a week ago, Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi a couple of days back and Ghaziabad just a day ago, now earthquake hits West Bengal and Odisha. An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 hit the Bay of Bengal early on Tuesday near Odisha’s Puri, with tremors felt in Kolkata and several parts of West Bengal along with neighbouring country Bangladesh. However, no loss of life or damage to property has been reported yet.
The earthquake occurred at 6:10 am as informed by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). Though the earthquake tremors caused momentary panic among the residents of Kolkata, no immediate reports of damage or casualties have surfaced.

Earthquake Location

According to the NCS, the earthquake’s epicentre was located in the Bay of Bengal near Puri in Odisha, at a latitude of 19.52°N and a longitude of 88.55°E. The quake struck at a depth of 91 kilometres below the Earth’s surface.

Effect of Earthquake on Odisha and Kolkata

In Odisha, earthquake tremors were felt in places like Puri, Berhampur, Balasore, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. With Odisha falling in the moderately seismic-prone zone, the 5.1 magnitude quake woke up residents from their sleep. The tremors lasted for nearly a minute.
Kolkata also lies in seismic zone III, which places the city at moderate risk. While it’s not as prone to major quakes as places such as Northeast India, the Himalayas, or Gujarat, tremors do shake the city at regular intervals. Tremors are occasionally felt in Kolkata due to quakes in Nepal or North-East India. On January 8, mild tremors were felt in Kolkata following a powerful earthquake in Tibet. The earthquake created a momentary panic with Kolkata residents taking to social media to express their shock.

Ghaziabad Earthquake

A 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad at 3:24 PM on Sunday. The National Centre for Seismology reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Earthquake jolts Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi

An earthquake of moderate intensity hit Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district at 8.42 am on Sunday. Tremors were felt in parts of the district, though no loss of life or property was reported.
According to the MeT office, the earthquake was of 3.7 magnitude, and the epicentre was located at 31.48 degrees latitude and 76.95 degrees longitude in the Mandi region. The earthquake struck near Kiargi in Sundernagar area at a depth of 7 km. The Mandi district falls under seismic zone 5, which is a high-damage risk zone.

February 17 Earthquake which shook Delhi and Bihar

On February 17, 2025, an earthquake of magnitude 4.0 on the Richter scale jolted Delhi and Bihar. Tremors were felt in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and other areas surrounding Delhi. The earthquake also caused strong tremors in Bihar, especially in Patna and Muzaffarpur. However, no major casualties were reported.
While the earthquake in Delhi occurred at 5:36 AM, it shook Bihar at 8:02 AM. The epicentre of the Delhi earthquake was in Dhaula Kuan while the epicentre of the Bihar earthquake was in Siwan.

Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation,” he mentioned in an X post.
