Apple Drops New MacBook Air M5: Two Sizes, More Power, Starting at Rs 1.19 Lakh

The CSR Journal Magazine

The newly released Apple MacBook Air M5 is being hailed as a suitable laptop for a wide range of users, including office employees, students, and those working remotely. While Apple has positioned the device as a leading option among laptops, its price begins at Rs 1,19,000, which is on the higher end, but the laptop aims to justify its cost through performance and design. The product is available in two variants, one featuring a 13.6-inch screen and the other a more expansive 15.3-inch display, with the latter being reviewed here.

Both models have seen a price increase of Rs 20,000 from their predecessors; however, they also offer improved storage, with the base model featuring 512GB, up from 256GB. An educational discount of Rs 11,000 is available for students and teachers, making the initial investment slightly more feasible for some users.

Despite its premium price point, the MacBook Air M5 stands out in the competitive laptop market, reportedly delivering a superb user experience that many find worthwhile.

Design Features and User Experience

The design of the MacBook Air M5 remains largely unchanged from previous iterations, retaining its high-quality aluminium alloy construction known for its premium feel. The device is lightweight, with the 13-inch model weighing approximately 1.23 kg and the 15-inch variant around 1.5 kg, making it easy to carry without significant fatigue. Moreover, the laptop features a fan-less design, leading to silent operation, which many users may find appealing compared to some Windows laptops.

The larger screen of the 15-inch model allows for a better viewing experience and houses a superior speaker system that enhances audio quality. The expansive trackpad and well-crafted keyboard offer improved usability, accommodating a more comfortable typing experience.

Apple continues to deliver high-quality screens, and while the MacBook Air M5 may not match the contrast levels of OLED displays found in some competitors, it offers vibrant colours and satisfactory brightness, contributing to its strong visual performance.

Capabilities and Limitations

In terms of technical specifications, the MacBook Air M5 incorporates the new M5 chipset, which is approximately one and a half times faster than its predecessor, the M4, in graphics and AI workloads. Despite this, everyday tasks such as web browsing or using standard applications like Pages and Keynote feel comparably smooth to users transitioning from the M4. The M5 model is particularly beneficial for those upgrading from older MacBook models, offering a substantial enhancement in overall performance.

Coupled with a default storage capacity of 512GB and an option to expand up to 2TB, along with 16GB RAM—expandable to 32GB in the 15-inch variant—this laptop meets the needs of the average user. However, specialised tasks such as intensive video editing may necessitate additional RAM or storage, reminding users to consider their specific requirements.

While the MacBook Air M5 excels in usability and offers a cohesive experience thanks to macOS, it is essential to note that it may not cater to niche markets such as avid gamers or users requiring extensive software customisation. Those needing powerful applications may consider the more robust MacBook Pro instead.
