Noida Protests Exposed: WhatsApp Groups and Social Media Behind ‘Planned’ Mobilisation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent violent protests in Noida, sparked by demands for higher wages, have been identified as the result of a meticulously planned operation conducted through various online platforms. Authorities revealed that social media, specifically dedicated WhatsApp groups and possible call centre-like setups, were used to orchestrate these widespread demonstrations. Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh stated that the ongoing investigation suggests the unrest was not spontaneous but rather a result of coordinated actions by organised groups.

According to Commissioner Singh, the rapid digital mobilisation across multiple interfaces indicates a central organisation behind the events. She mentioned that a number of recently created social media accounts aimed at inciting unrest had surfaced within days. The establishment of several WhatsApp groups, in particular, has raised eyebrows among investigators.

Singh stressed that the addition of workers to these groups through QR codes not only expedited the recruitment process but also allowed the organisers to maintain the anonymity of participants. This approach reflects a sophisticated strategy aimed at maximising turnout while minimising identification risks for those involved.

Investigation into Potential External Links

Investigators are probing whether larger networks or external entities could be fuelling the protests. The Gautam Buddh Nagar police are actively seeking to uncover the funding mechanisms behind these orchestrated movements, with Commissioner Singh confirming that agencies will follow any leads that suggest cross-border involvement. The emphasis is on ensuring accountability and tracking financial sources to understand the full scope of the unrest.

As the investigation continues, authorities are particularly vigilant about the emergence of organised gangs that might be operating behind the scenes. Police believe that these groups are inciting unrest amongst workers and exploiting their grievances for ulterior motives. They will be closely monitoring the situation and working to dismantle any identified networks.

Commissioner Singh’s comments have highlighted the need for vigilance in a digital age, stating that such tactics demonstrate an alarming capacity to mobilise individuals rapidly while remaining largely hidden. The implications of these findings underline the importance of addressing the underlying causes that can lead to unrest.

Government Response and Minimum Wage Increase

In light of the recent disturbances, the Uttar Pradesh government has taken steps to address workers’ concerns by announcing an increase in minimum wages across various worker categories. This decision comes as part of efforts to ease tensions among the workforce and ensure fair compensation. The new wage rates will be effective retroactively from April 1, 2026.

Under this new regulation, unskilled workers in regions like Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad will see their monthly earnings rise to Rs 13,690, a significant jump from the previous Rs 11,313. Similarly, semi-skilled workers will receive Rs 15,059, while skilled workers’ wages will rise to Rs 16,868.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called on employers to adhere strictly to timely wage payments, provide fair overtime compensation, bonuses, and social security benefits. He emphasised the importance of maintaining safe working conditions, particularly for women workers. This comprehensive approach from the state government has been positioned as a necessary measure to prevent further agitation and ensure industrial stability.
