World Avocado Organisation Highlights Avocado’s Health Benefits

The CSR Journal Magazine

The World Avocado Organisation (WAO) has drawn attention to the significance of avocados in promoting wellness as India transitions from the monsoon season to its vibrant festive period. The change in weather coincides with an uptick in social gatherings and hectic schedules, making it crucial to maintain daily nutrition. Avocados, being nutrient-dense, serve as an ideal complement to various Indian meals while supporting health and hydration.

With around 73 per cent water content, avocados assist in meeting daily hydration needs, which is especially important during the warmer months. Their nutritional profile includes essential vitamins and healthy fats, making them a versatile choice for meals throughout the day.

A half-serving of avocado, weighing 68 grams, provides significant amounts of potassium and magnesium, vital for maintaining electrolyte balance. Specifically, it contains 345 mg of potassium—almost double the amount found in a banana—and 19.5 mg of magnesium, which may aid in preventing muscle fatigue and sluggishness, particularly useful during the busy festive preparations.

Health Benefits in Seasonal Context

As families engage in various celebrations, sustaining energy levels is paramount. Avocados contain seven grams of dietary fibre per half fruit, coupled with healthy fats that contribute to prolonged satiety. This characteristic may help prevent sudden energy dips, allowing individuals to remain active and engaged throughout the day.

The transition in weather during September can also affect skin health. Avocados provide natural antioxidants, including vitamin E and carotenoids such as lutein, which can enhance skin elasticity and overall appearance. This is particularly relevant during times when people often seek ways to rejuvenate and care for their skin amidst the changing climate.

Under its campaign theme “Make Wellness Joyful,” WAO encourages Indian consumers to view wellness not as a sacrifice but as a chance to explore nourishing and enjoyable foods. This positive framing aligns well with the festive spirit, reinforcing the idea that health and enjoyment can coexist.

Festive Recipes Featuring Avocado

In line with its emphasis on wellness and nutrition, WAO has shared festive recipes that incorporate avocados, encouraging diverse culinary experimentation. One such recipe is the Festive Avocado Chaat Board. It serves four to six people and includes ingredients like chopped ripe avocados, boiled chickpeas, and a variety of spices and garnishes to create a flavourful dip suitable for festive gatherings.

The preparation involves blending avocados with hung curd and lemon juice to create a creamy base, which is then layered with fresh vegetables and garnishes, making for an attractive and appetising dish that fits well with the festive theme.

Another recommendable recipe is the No Bread Sweet Potato Avocado Sandwich. This creative sandwich utilises baked sweet potato slices instead of traditional bread and is layered with a flavourful avocado spread. This dish, easy to prepare, serves two to three, offering a nutritious option for those looking for lighter, yet satisfying meals during the festive season.
