The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) was inaugurated on September 8 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a significant advancement in India’s logistics infrastructure. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that the inauguration of three critical sections will catalyse a transformation in the nation’s logistics domain, bolstering India’s position within the global supply chain.

Fadnavis elaborated on the advantages that this new corridor will bring, including expedited cargo movement from Uttar Pradesh to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT). He noted that this development would not only speed up rail transport but also substantially lower transportation expenses.

Benefits of the Corridor for Trade and Employment

The Chief Minister remarked that the dedicated freight corridor is expected to reduce logistics costs to about seven per cent. He emphasised that this reduction will allow Indian businesses to compete more effectively against international rivals, particularly China, ultimately benefiting India’s role in the global supply chain.

Furthermore, Fadnavis stressed the immediate significance of the project for Maharashtra, as JNPT is one of the country’s principal ports. He indicated that the corridor’s operations could stimulate job creation in the state, thereby aiding economic growth.

Broader Impacts on National Infrastructure

Prime Minister Modi, during the inauguration, also addressed various development projects valued at over Rs 35,000 crore in Vadodara. These projects encompass railway, highway, and other state initiatives, further underscoring the government’s commitment to enhance infrastructure nationwide.

During his speech, Modi characterised the completion of the extensive 2,800-kilometre Dedicated Freight Corridor as a pivotal achievement for India in the 21st century. This development is positioned as a vital component of his vision for a ‘Viksit Bharat’, or developed India, indicating the need for efficient and rapid connectivity.

Moreover, the Prime Minister introduced ‘Gati Shakti’ as a cornerstone of his plan for national progress. He stated that improved connectivity not only fosters convenience but also aligns with the swift pace of modern demands.
