The convocation event for the Indian Forest Service (IFS) Officer Trainees of the 2024-26 Professional Training Course took place at the Convocation Hall of the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on August 1. This notable event saw the culmination of rigorous training for 111 officer trainees, who have been preparing for their roles in forest management and conservation.

The graduates have received their training at the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), which is renowned for its longstanding tradition of excellence in forestry education. With 21 of the graduates being women and two international trainees hailing from Bhutan, the ceremony marked a significant milestone in the professional journeys of these individuals.

Distribution of Trainees and Institutional Legacy

In this graduating batch, Madhya Pradesh received the highest number of allocations, with 11 officers designated to the state, whilst five trainees were assigned to Uttarakhand. The Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, alongside its predecessor, the Indian Forest College, has been instrumental in training generations of IFS officers since its establishment in 1938. Over the past 88 years, it has also educated 369 forest officers from 14 allied countries, solidifying its status as one of India’s premier forestry training institutions.

During the ceremony, Minister Yadav emphasised the importance of the work undertaken by forest officers, especially considering India’s goals for 2047. He praised the current administration’s commitment to enhancing India’s environmental initiatives and noted the considerable increase in protected areas across the nation, including forest reserves and tiger and elephant habitats.

The Minister pointed out that more than 16 organisations within the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change are actively engaged in advancing forestry and conservation efforts throughout India. This support is integral to sustaining the tradition of forest service that has emerged in the country.

Minister’s Personal Reflections

In an insightful address, Yadav reflected on his personal journey from being involved in public interest litigation cases concerning environmental issues to leading the ministry responsible for forest management. He remarked on the distinct roles of activism and administration, acknowledging that both have their merits in serving the broader goals of environmental conservation.

Through his experiences, he underscored the crucial role played by accountable and dedicated officers in the advancement of India’s forest service. Yadav expressed confidence in the capabilities of the current generation of officers, highlighting their dedication to continuing the rich tradition within the forest service.

The Minister concluded his address by extending his congratulations to the graduating class, reinforcing the importance of their future contributions to India’s environmental legacy. The ceremony not only celebrated the achievements of the trainees but also reaffirmed the commitment towards sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation in India.
