Nonprofits in India for education and skill development have a gargantuan task laid out for them. Education is of utmost importance among parents who are concerned for their children’s future. Then there are children who unfortunately don’t have parents and are deprived of basic essentials and cannot afford education for a stable future.
Fortunately, there are many NPOs (nonprofit organisation) who work towards providing opportunities for the orphaned and vulnerable children’s education and essential skill development.
Education is both the means as well as the end to a better life: the means because it empowers an individual to earn his/her livelihood and the end because it increases one’s awareness on a range of issues – from healthcare to appropriate social behaviour to understanding one’s rights – and in the process help him/her evolve into a better citizen.
The objective of these NPOs is that no child be deprived of basic rights to a substantial future. They work organically and structurally with education planning and training to inculcate the right skills at an early age, and play an important role in shaping the personality and future of these kids.
1. Miracle Foundation
Miracle Foundation is an international non-profit organization that provides life-changing care and support to vulnerable orphaned children. As the name suggests, the organization helps create ‘miracles’ for those without parents and other vulnerable institutionalized children by finding a safe, loving family for every child by 2040.
It is among the top nonprofits in India for education and skill development of children because of its multi-faceted, collaborative and community-based ‘Child First’ approach. Miracle Foundation India ensures that all these children are educated, healthy, safe, and most importantly loved until they find a permanent family.
2. UNICEF India
UNICEF India recognizes that the health, hygiene, nutrition, education, protection and social development of children are all connected. Targeting efforts for them at all stages of their growth – infant and mother, child and adolescent – and on a range of traditional programme fronts will see that inroads are made to ensure that children not only survive, but thrive too.
3. Smile Foundation
Smile Foundation is an NPO in India directly benefitting over 750,000 children and their families every year, through more than 350 live welfare projects on education, healthcare, livelihood in over 1,000 remote villages and slums across 25 states of India.
4. Akshaya Patra Foundation
Akshaya Patra Foundation strives to eliminate classroom hunger by implementing the Mid-Day Meal Scheme in the government schools and government-aided schools. Alongside, Akshaya Patra also aims at countering malnutrition and supporting the right to education of socio-economically disadvantaged children.
Since the year 2000, Akshaya Patra has been concerting all its efforts towards providing fresh and nutritious meals to children on every single school day, making it among the top nonprofits in India for education and skill development.
5. Magic Bus India
Founded by Matthew Spacie in 1999, Magic Bus equips children and young people in the age group of 12 to 18, with the skills and knowledge they need, to grow up and move out of poverty. This takes them from a childhood full of challenges to a life with meaningful livelihoods. Since its inception, Magic Bus has transformed the lives of one million children and young people, helping them move out of poverty.
By enabling children to complete secondary education, delay their age of marriage, and skilling young people to be in jobs, they are helping move a generation out of the vicious cycle of poverty.
