The CSR Journal Magazine

In a troubling incident that has raised alarms regarding public health, the Surat Police apprehended a medical shop owner for allegedly repackaging a veterinary tonic and marketing it as a children’s medicine at an inflated price. The operation was conducted by a team from the Surat Special Operations Group, which targeted a medical store located in the Gopipura area of Surat. The owner, identified as Mohammad Sajid Ibrahim Mulla, aged 51, was taken into custody on Wednesday, as confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rajdeepsinh Nakum.

According to the DCP, Mulla reportedly sourced large containers of Himalaya Liv.52 Protec Liquid Veterinary Feed Supplement, which is intended for animal use, and transferred the liquid into smaller bottles of 60 ml and 100 ml. He allegedly affixed counterfeit labels to these bottles, renaming the product as Himalaya Liv.52 Drops, which is marketed as a paediatric medication.

The accused was reportedly selling the repackaged product at double the original price. During the raid, police recovered materials and items valued at Rs 31,195, further highlighting the scale of the operation.

Legal Implications

Following the arrest, an FIR was lodged at the Athwa police station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). The charges include Section 123, which pertains to causing harm through poison, Section 125, which addresses rash and negligent acts that endanger human life, Section 336, related to forgery, and Section 278, which concerns the sale of a drug misrepresented as another drug. These charges reflect the serious nature of the alleged offences and the potential risks posed to the public.

The police have urged anyone who may have purchased the fraudulent product and experienced adverse health effects to seek immediate medical attention. They have also encouraged the public to report any such incidents to law enforcement authorities. This appeal underscores the importance of consumer safety and the need for vigilance when purchasing medications.

Authorities are emphasising the necessity for consumers to verify the authenticity and quality of medications with their healthcare providers. They recommend that individuals adhere strictly to prescribed dosages and consult their doctors before taking any unfamiliar products.

Public Health Concerns

This incident has sparked significant concern regarding the safety of medicinal products available in the market. The act of selling animal feed as a children’s tonic not only poses health risks but also undermines public trust in healthcare products. The police have reiterated the importance of regulatory compliance in the pharmaceutical sector to prevent such occurrences in the future.

As investigations continue, authorities are likely to explore the broader implications of this case, including potential links to other illegal activities in the pharmaceutical supply chain. The case serves as a stark reminder of the need for stringent oversight and consumer awareness in the healthcare domain.

In light of this incident, the community is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to medical products. The police are committed to ensuring public safety and maintaining the integrity of healthcare services in the region.
