Student Develops AI to Predict Air Turbulence, Wins $100,000 Scholarship

Aditya Sengupta, an 18-year-old student, turned his unsettling experience of sudden turbulence on a flight into a significant research endeavour. This led to the creation of ForeCAT, an artificial intelligence system designed to predict clear-air turbulence. His innovative work has earned him recognition as a Davidson Fellow Laureate and a scholarship worth $100,000.

Clear-air turbulence, often abbreviated as CAT, poses a unique challenge for airlines as it can occur without any visible indicators, such as clouds. Sengupta’s journey into this field began with a fundamental question regarding the unpredictability of something that can be quite hazardous during air travel.

ForeCAT integrates concepts from both artificial intelligence and atmospheric physics, providing a promising approach to enhance the forecasting of such air disturbances. This systematic blend of technology and science offers a fresh perspective for predicting potentially dangerous weather phenomena.

Technical Aspects of ForeCAT

ForeCAT leverages machine learning techniques in conjunction with established atmospheric physics principles. It incorporates physical laws into its neural network, enabling the identification of regions where invisible air currents may develop and assessing the potential severity of turbulence.

According to research documentation from the Davidson Institute, ForeCAT has demonstrated improved prediction accuracy compared to conventional forecasting techniques. The system reportedly achieved a classification accuracy of 95 per cent, surpassing existing tools like the Graphical Turbulence Guidance algorithm. It also successfully retro-predicted significant turbulence encountered by a Singapore Airlines flight in May 2024 with a confidence level of 87 per cent.

Sengupta’s passion for the topic was ignited by his personal experience as a flight passenger. His growing interest led to the formulation of an independent research project, encompassing disciplines such as atmospheric science, computer science, and machine learning.

Personal Journey and Academic Achievements

Sengupta’s development of ForeCAT was entirely self-directed while he was still in secondary school. He immersed himself in topics ranging from atmospheric science to turbulence and machine learning, navigating through imperfect data and discarding multiple initial concepts before arriving at a viable solution.

He acknowledged that the path of research is seldom linear and that setbacks can often contribute valuable insights. Beyond his AI project, Sengupta has actively participated in VEX Robotics, leading his team to achieve a first-place finish in the US and securing second place worldwide at the World Championship. He has also received accolades as a Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar and a finalist at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.

The design of ForeCAT envisions practical applications in aviation. The system has the potential to be integrated with current air traffic control systems and flight-planning software. Improved forecasting could allow pilots and air traffic controllers additional time to adjust flight routes in anticipation of turbulent conditions, thus enhancing the safety of air travel.

Future Aspirations and Recognition

Being named a Davidson Fellow Laureate has significantly validated Sengupta’s research journey, which was sparked by his earlier flight experience. He expressed that this accolade offers him the chance to connect with a community of ambitious youths who strive to make a positive impact through their innovative ideas.

As per the Davidson Institute, Sengupta intends to pursue studies in computing and the natural sciences while progressing his efforts in engineering applications that merge physics and computer science. His journey exemplifies how a daunting experience can inspire meaningful scientific exploration. By harnessing curiosity alongside advancements in AI and physics, actionable solutions to the challenges faced by countless air travellers have emerged.
