Starbucks to Launch First Major India Corporate Office by October, Hiring for Tech Roles

Starbucks is set to establish its first significant corporate office in India, primarily aimed at hiring technology-focused positions. This initiative is part of a larger global reorganisation and cost-cutting strategy. Operations for the new office are expected to commence in October 2026, aligning with Starbucks’ fiscal year 2027.

The forthcoming office will concentrate on technology operations and engineering-related functions. Starbucks will begin the hiring process once a location has been confirmed later this year.

According to an internal communication viewed by Bloomberg, Anand Varadarajan, Starbucks’ Chief Technology Officer, stated that the firm aims to lessen reliance on external service providers. He indicated that developing a multi-site technology structure would enhance collaboration among teams and provide greater control over its technology operations.

Strategic Shift Towards Internal Teams

Varadarajan has voiced concerns that heavy reliance on external technology vendors inflates costs, as contractors typically include additional mark-ups. By employing more in-house technology teams, Starbucks intends to streamline its operations and increase overall efficiency.

The selection of India for this expansion is reportedly due to the existing partnerships Starbucks has with numerous technology firms in the country. The company perceives India as a vital hub for talent specialising in fields such as software engineering, cloud infrastructure, digital platforms, and enterprise technology roles.

Although Starbucks has yet to officially announce the city where the new office will be located, it is anticipated that the selection will be made public later this year prior to the initiation of recruitment efforts.

Organisational Changes Amid Cost-Cutting Measures

This planned office in India is being launched during a pivotal period of transformation for Starbucks under the leadership of CEO Brian Niccol. The company is currently executing a wider strategy to eliminate approximately $2 billion in costs on a global scale. This effort involves restructuring various business units, reducing workforce numbers, and relocating certain teams.

Recent reports indicate that Starbucks aims to transfer around 270 technology roles—equivalent to nearly 20 per cent of its technology workforce—to a new office in Nashville, United States. Concurrently, the organisation has proceeded with laying off technology staff as part of its restructuring efforts.

Since February of last year, Starbucks has eliminated more than 2,000 jobs, including an additional 300 corporate positions reported this week. The company’s strategy to enhance internal technological capabilities while minimising vendor reliance is perceived as part of a broader initiative to simplify operations and achieve long-term savings.

Current Operations in India

At present, Starbucks operates through Tata Starbucks, its joint venture with Tata Consumer Products, which manages Starbucks cafés in various Indian cities. The forthcoming technology hub will mark Starbucks’ first independent corporate office in India, distinguishing it from its existing operational framework.

This move signals a significant step for Starbucks in expanding its footprint in the Indian market, noting the country’s potential as a crucial player in the global technology landscape.
