Pakistan Army Crosses LoC, Violates Ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir

The Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir experienced an unexpected escalation on April 1, 2025, when Pakistan Army forces crossed into Indian territory at the Poonch district. The Pakistan forces started unprovoked firing after blasting a mine during their intrusion at the Krishna Ghati sector. According to official reports from the Indian Army, they reacted quickly to this attack.
Indian troops from the Nangi Tekri Battalion of the Krishna Ghati Brigade managed their response with discipline, which helped preserve control over the situation. The situation remains under the supervision of authorities who confirmed that the Indian forces suffered no injuries during the incident. The official representative reaffirmed the commitment to maintain the current ceasefire agreement, which both parties confirmed with the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGsMO) in 2021. Despite ongoing tension, both nations maintained an agreement to promote peaceful conditions along the Line of Control (LoC).

Multiple Ceasefire Observed in Region

The recent incident adds itself to the increasing number of ceasefire violations observed in this region. The Pir Panjal region, which contains the Krishna Ghati sector has witnessed an increasing number of cross-border firing over the past two months. Reports indicate Pakistani military forces engaged in sniping while also conducting firing operations with Border Action Team (BAT) activities. These actions demanded immediate action from the Indian Army triggering effective monitoring of events by the Pakistan military forces.
During this violation, the Indian military stopped Pakistani soldiers from conducting infiltration across the border. Indian military forces counterattacked the infiltration attempt and reports confirmed that 4-5 Pakistani soldiers died in the process. The incident resulted in no death or destruction of the Indian army or assets. The military presence of the Indian Army continues in the region to address any intensifying situation.

Violation of ceasefire Raises Concern

The recent ceasefire violation takes place during a continuous phase of security operations across Jammu and Kashmir. The Panjtirthi region of Kathua witnessed the formation of a joint operation by the Indian Army together with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) after suspicious activities were detected in the evening of March 31, 2025. The first exchange of gunfire occurred early on April 1, 2025, thereby triggering a search-and-destroy operation by the security forces that continues to this day.
The escalation of ceasefire violations raises concerns over the stability of the 2021 ceasefire agreement, designed to prevent exactly such incidents. Despite multiple rounds of talks between the military leadership of both nations, the violations continue, casting doubt on the long-term sustainability of the ceasefire. The Indian Army has emphasized the need for both sides to honor the DGsMO understanding, which was put in place to reduce tensions along the LoC.
Recent months have brought more of these incidents to the southern Pir Panjal range’s Krishna Ghati sector. So far the fast actions of the Indian Army have eliminated potential major consequences of these violations. Tensions between India and Pakistan continue to run high as both sides are on constant alert and the situation continues to receive close monitoring.
