Opposition Leaders Pass Resolution to Remove Speaker in J&K Assembly

Three opposition members submitted a notice to the Jammu and Kashmir assembly Secretariat on Tuesday, expressing their intent to move a resolution for the removal of the speaker, Abdul Rahim Rather. The notice came after a heated exchange inside the assembly on the need for a discussion on the Waqf Act and was signed by the Peoples Conference’s Sajid Ghani Lone and People’s Democratic Party’s Mir Mohammad Fayaz and Rafiq Ahmed Naik.

Addressing the assembly secretary, the notice stated, “The decision stems from widespread outrage within the house over the speaker’s action, including the rejection of discussions on an adjournment motion and the refusal to entertain a resolution brought by the opposition parties.”

Assembly Ruckus

The ruling National Conference legislators pressed for discussion on the act. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary accused the chair of not allowing members to speak. While the PDP legislator Waheed ur Rahman Para marched out of the assembly. The Jammu and Kashmir assembly was in a state of complete ruckus on Tuesday.

In the assembly, when the speaker asked a BJP member to present his questions, the NC members insisted on speaking on the act, too. However, the speaker had already disallowed their adjournment movement on Monday. At this moment, Para came near the Well of the House and drew the speaker’s attention towards a fresh resolution against the Waft Act.

The speaker responded, “Koi resolution Nahi laga sakte Aap” (You cannot bring any resolution.)
