Motion to Remove Speaker Criticized by BJP as Politically Motivated

The CSR Journal Magazine

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) members on Wednesday questioned Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, describing him as a “leader of propaganda” who benefits from dynastic privilege and struggles to accept equal treatment within the political framework. The comments came in response to the opposition’s motion seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Anurag Thakur, a prominent BJP leader, suggested that Gandhi operates under a belief that the established rules do not apply to him. He stated that a specific political family thinks it stands above the rules and even the Constitution itself.

Speaker Berated for Upholding Parliamentary Standards

Thakur compared Speaker Birla to a school principal who maintains discipline and asserted that those who disagree with his leadership could choose to leave rather than disrupt the parliamentary proceedings. He emphasized that Speaker Birla’s role is crucial and assured that he is not stepping down. Various remarks from ruling party MPs have been expunged by the Speaker in the past, which shows his impartiality in maintaining order, according to Thakur.

Allegations of Anarchism Directed at Opposition

Ravi Shankar Prasad of the BJP criticized the opposition’s motion as driven by ego, referring specifically to Rahul Gandhi. He underscored Prime Minister Modi’s unwavering commitment and urged the Leader of the Opposition to consider his words carefully, particularly concerning national security matters. Prasad denounced the Congress party and Gandhi for harboring anarchic tendencies and stated that they appear intent on transforming Parliament into a space of chaos.

Support for Speaker’s Conduct from TDP

TDP MP Krishna Prasad Tenneti expressed support for Speaker Birla, lauding his conduct and warning against actions that might undermine the institution’s respect due to political discord. Tenneti suggested that defending the authority of the Speaker is essential for maintaining the integrity of the House, clarifying that this stance is not simply a defense of an individual but a protection of institutional values.

Concerns Over Dynastic Privilege Raised

Tejasvi Surya from the BJP claimed that the Gandhi family struggles with accepting equal treatment under the law, a sentiment he articulated as a misunderstanding of justice among those accustomed to dynastic advantage. He argued that they perceive equal treatment as a form of injustice. This claim was reiterated as an indication of the family’s need to adjust to a more egalitarian political environment.

AIMIM Leader Criticizes Government and Opposition

AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi added to the discourse by accusing the government of attempting to dominate the legislature while also criticizing opposition parties for failing to represent smaller parties like his. He remarked on the perception that he is viewed as a “B team” of the BJP, emphasizing the necessity for inclusivity within parliamentary discussions and decisions.
