The recent protests at Lovely Professional University (LPU) have resulted in significant unrest, following the circulation of social media reports alleging the rape of a student on campus. The protests began early on Sunday morning in Phagwara, Punjab, prompting intervention by law enforcement. The situation escalated quickly, leading to the deployment of police personnel to manage the gathering of students.

Police Assurances and Security Measures

In response to the unfolding situation, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Fayaz Farooqui addressed the media, confirming that over 2,000 police officers are stationed at the university to oversee security during the night. He expressed confidence in maintaining law and order, stating, “We will ensure security on the campus throughout the night… The process is ongoing, and we are working to keep the situation under control.” Furthermore, he reassured families of students residing in hostels that safety measures are in place and that all individuals are secure.

ADGP Farooqui further commented on the cooperation from university students in efforts to restore peace on campus. He noted, “The atmosphere here is completely calm,” indicating that students have been responsive to police requests amid the protests.

Commissioner of Police Jalandhar, Satinder Singh, contributed to the efforts to dispel panic by affirming that reports of disturbances within hostels were unfounded. He stated, “All hostels have been checked, and there are no issues. Traffic has resumed, and the situation is normal.” This statement served to reassure families and the public that despite the protests, order has been largely restored.

University Suspends Classes and Examinations Amid Protests

Amid ongoing protests, Lovely Professional University announced the suspension of regular classes for a period of ten days starting September 28. This decision was made prioritising the safety and well-being of students amid the distress caused by the protests. The university has also postponed all mid-term examinations until further notice.

In an effort to manage the situation, university administration has urged students to remain calm and follow official instructions. They advised students to stay connected for further updates as the situation develops. The administration emphasised that the safety of all students is of utmost importance and that necessary precautions are being taken.

As the protests continue, students and local residents are feeling the repercussions. A truck driver, Vikas Yadav, expressed frustration about being stranded since 8 am, highlighting the wider impact of the demonstrations on daily life and travel in the area. He mentioned, “We are extremely distressed… We have had to abandon our vehicles and flee,” illustrating the disruptions caused by the escalating protests.
