In a heartwarming display of humanity and quick thinking, a Kolkata Police Traffic Sergeant transformed from a law enforcer into a lifesaver when an ambulance carrying a pregnant woman broke down at a busy city intersection.

The incident unfolded at the congested crossing of Diamond Harbour Road and Biren Roy Road (West). Sergeant Koushik Naskar was managing the heavy flow of traffic when a frantic situation arose: an ambulance transporting 31-year-old Chandana Ghorui from Diamond Harbour to SSKM Hospital suddenly suffered a mechanical failure.

With the patient in active labor, her panicked family members rushed to Sergeant Naskar, pleading for immediate assistance. Recognizing the clinical urgency, Naskar immediately alerted the Traffic Guard control room via wireless to coordinate an emergency response.

Emergency Response and Delivery

Senior traffic officials arrived on the scene within minutes, securing a police emergency vehicle to complete the transport. However, the baby was not willing to wait. Before the transfer could be finalized, Ms. Ghorui gave birth right there at the intersection.

Under the protection and assistance of the on-duty officers and civic volunteers, a safe environment was maintained for the delivery. Following the birth, both mother and newborn were rushed to Vidyasagar State General Hospital in the police vehicle.

“Our priority was ensuring the safety of the mother and the child. In such moments, every second counts more than any traffic signal,” a senior official noted.

Condition Update

Hospital authorities have since confirmed that both the mother, a resident of South 24 Parganas, and her infant are in stable condition and doing well.
This incident serves as a poignant reminder that Kolkata’s “men in uniform” often serve as the city’s first line of emotional and humanitarian support, proving that duty and compassion can go hand-in-hand.
