Central investigating agency Enforcement Directorate has filed its first charge sheet in the RG Kar corruption case. On Friday, February 6, the ED submitted the charge sheet against former RG Kar Hospital Principal Sandeep Ghosh in a special court. Besides Ghosh, the investigating agency has also filed charge sheets against accused Biplab Singh and Suman Hazra.
Notably, the allegations of financial corruption emerged during the investigation into the rape and murder case of a female doctor on duty at RG Kar Hospital in August 2024. The CBI conducted parallel investigations into both cases.
Subsequently, the ED investigation revealed allegations of various tender irregularities during Sandeep Ghosh’s tenure. Alongside this, multiple allegations of corruption surfaced regarding illegal parking within the hospital premises and the irregular purchase of various equipment. It was at this point that the names of Biplab Singh and Suman Hazra came up. They were also allegedly awarded tenders irregularly by Sandeep Ghosh.
During the RG Kar incident, former RG Kar Deputy Superintendent Akhtar Ali had filed a case alleging rampant corruption against Sandeep Ghosh, demanding an ED investigation. Based on this, the ED, along with the CBI, started an investigation. ED officials conducted searches at multiple locations, including Sandeep Ghosh’s ancestral home in New Town, Chandan Lauh’s house in Tala, and a pharmacy in Kalindi. Sandeep Ghosh, Biplab Singh, and Suman Hazra were arrested back to back. Biplab and Suman are reportedly vendors. The last person to be arrested in this case was Sandeep’s security guard, Afsar Ali. The central agency arrested a total of four people during its investigation.
However, in January 2025, the Enforcement Directorate faced severe criticism from the Calcutta High Court in the RG Kar financial corruption case. High Court Justice Tirthankar Ghosh had commented, “The ED does not file charge sheets, nor does it initiate the judicial process.” After a lengthy investigation, the ED finally filed its first charge sheet in this case today, Friday.
CBI court issues warrant against ‘whistleblower’ Akhtar Ali
Meanwhile, on Friday, the CBI court issued an arrest warrant against the ‘whistleblower’ Akhtar Ali in this case. A non-bailable arrest warrant has been issued against the hospital’s former deputy superintendent. He was supposed to appear for the hearing today, Friday, but he did not turn up. The court, angered by his absence, ordered his immediate arrest.
Despite being required to appear in court in the RG Kar corruption case, Akhtar Ali has repeatedly avoided doing so. He is currently hospitalised. After the RG Kar corruption case came to light, it was claimed that he was the ‘whistleblower’ and that he had brought the corruption to everyone’s attention.
Notably, on Wednesday, the Calcutta High Court rejected Akhtar Ali’s anticipatory bail application. Based on the CBI report and charge sheet, Justice Joy Sengupta observed that Akhtar Ali, along with the accused former hospital principal Sandeep Ghosh, was deeply involved in the financial corruption at RG Kar Hospital.
On Wednesday, his lawyer claimed in court that he was not involved in any financial corruption. He was a ‘whistleblower’ and was the first to bring forward allegations of financial corruption against Sandeep Ghosh. However, the lawyer for the central investigating agency, Amajit De, claimed in court that the CBI has sufficient evidence linking Akhtar Ali with former RG Kar Hospital principal Sandeep Ghosh. Following this, the court ordered his arrest on Friday.
