The Indian Railways have taken several significant steps in the last decade towards improvement. These steps include prioritizing the working environment and welfare of loco pilots. The Ministry of Railways has prioritized the safety, comfort, and work-life balance of loco pilots.
According to reports, prior to 2014, facilities such as air-conditioning in running rooms and locomotive cabs were not available, However, noteworthy improvements have been made by the year 2024. Today, all 558 running rooms of Indian Railways are air-conditioned.
Mordern amenities
Furthermore, all these rooms are equipped with modern amenities such as RO water, yoga and meditation spaces, reading rooms, and subsidized meals. Around 7075 locomotive cabs have been equipped with air-conditioning, ergonomic seating, and other facilities. These amenities have reduced fatigue for employees working long hours.
It is worth mentioning that Toilet facilities are being now provided as standard in all new locomotives. Toilet facilities are now available in 1170 locomotives, while Older locomotives are also being retrofitted with necessary upgrades. Additionally, new running rooms are being constructed on busy routes, reducing the working time for employees. These measures have improved working conditions and provided better rest and comfort for staff.
The ‘Kavach’ system
In terms of safety, Indian Railways has adopted several cutting-edge technologies, such as the ‘Kavach’ system, This includes fog safety devices, and driver alert systems, ensuring the safety of Loco pilots. Over 21,000 fog safety devices have been installed, A simulator-based training is enhancing the decision-making abilities of employees.
Additionally, the use of ‘Vigilance Control Devices’ has further improved the safety and efficiency of loco pilots. These technological advancements play a crucial role in enhancing the overall safety standards of Indian Railways.
Computer-based recruitment exams
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Indian Railways successfully conducted two major computer-based recruitment exams. Over 2.37 crore candidates appeared for these exams. As a result, more than 1.30 lakh candidates, including 51,856 Assistant Loco pilots/Loco pilots, were appointed.
In order to streamline the recruitment process, a yearly recruitment calendar has been implemented starting in 2024. This will ensure timely examinations and faster appointment procedures. This initiative not only makes the recruitment process more transparent and convenient but also ensures timely appointments.
Working hours regulated
Furthermore, the working hours of Loco pilots have been regulated. The average duty hours should not exceed 52 hours in 14 days. Additionally, necessary onboard and station facilities for freight, suburban, and passenger trains are being provided, including adequate rest time and basic amenities.
Indian Railways is also focusing on the mental and emotional well-being of employees, with efforts being made to boost morale through counselling sessions and family-oriented programs. Through these initiatives, Indian Railways continues to strengthen its commitment to the welfare and safety of its employees.
Welfare & comfort of staff
Moving forward in this direction, Western Railway has also taken steps to enhance the welfare and comfort of its running staff. All our running rooms across the zone are fully air conditioned. Facilities like subsidised canteen facilities with FSSAI certification, yoga and meditation rooms, reading rooms, food massagers, clean and hygienic toilets, wake up call facilities, shoe polish etc are also part of the running room facilities.
The running rooms have separate kitchens for vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, a dining hall, a meditation room, and a library for recreational activities. To cater to the needs of female employees, dedicated rooms and toilet facilities are also ensured at selected running rooms. For the safety of the employees, the running rooms are equipped with CCTV cameras to ensure constant surveillance and security.
