India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Truck Launched by Adani Group for Mining Operations

In a major step toward decarbonising industrial transportation, Adani Enterprises Ltd, the primary arm of the Adani Group, has introduced India’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered truck. This pioneering vehicle, which marks a significant milestone in India’s clean energy transition, will support the company’s mining logistics, with the initial deployment at the Gare Pelma III coal mine in Chhattisgarh.

The Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, officially inaugurated the hydrogen-powered truck in Raipur. This truck will facilitate coal transport between the Gare Pelma III Block and the state’s power plant. Applauding the initiative, he emphasised the state’s leadership in sustainable development and responsible energy practices, stating, “Chhattisgarh not only supports the nation’s power needs but also sets new benchmarks in sustainability.”

Each truck in this new fleet is fitted with three hydrogen tanks and is capable of carrying loads up to 40 tons over a distance of 200 kilometers. The trucks operate on hydrogen fuel cells, which emit only water vapour and warm air, offering a quieter and cleaner alternative to traditional diesel vehicles. This effort aims to phase out diesel-run trucks in favor of environmentally friendly alternatives.

Adani Units Unite for Hydrogen Mining Trucks

The project is a collaborative undertaking by Adani Natural Resources (ANR) and Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), both entities under Adani Enterprises. ANIL is responsible for supplying the hydrogen fuel cells, furthering its portfolio that includes solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, and green hydrogen. By integrating smart technology and eco-friendly energy solutions, Adani aims to revolutionise logistics in the mining sector.

Dr. Vinay Prakash, CEO of Adani Natural Resources and Director at Adani Enterprises, highlighted the broader strategy behind the initiative: “Our hydrogen truck project is part of a holistic move toward cleaner mining. By utilising solar power, digital automation, tree transplantation technology, and semi-autonomous dozer push systems, we are building model mines that have minimal environmental impact.”

As diesel-fueled equipment continues to dominate the mining sector, the adoption of hydrogen fuel offers a cleaner substitute that reduces both emissions and operational noise. This transition supports India’s broader goals of reducing crude oil imports, curbing carbon emissions, and promoting energy self-sufficiency.

Adani Natural Resources Fuels Industrial Growth Globally

Adani Natural Resources plays a pivotal role in supplying essential resources for industrial development. With operations in India, Indonesia, and Australia, ANR’s portfolio spans coal, minerals, metals, LPG, bunkering services, and rock phosphate. The business aligns with India’s energy independence goals and aims to elevate the standard of living by supporting economic growth.

Adani Enterprises, the group’s flagship company, has a proven track record of incubating and scaling infrastructure-driven businesses. From ports and energy to data centers and airport management, Adani Enterprises has diversified into areas that fuel national development. With a strong push toward the green hydrogen economy and sustainable practices, the company continues to unlock long-term value for stakeholders.

This deployment marks not just a first for India but also a significant achievement for Asia, as Adani becomes the continent’s pioneer in integrating hydrogen trucks and semi-autonomous dozer technology into mining operations, setting the pace for a cleaner, more efficient future.
