India has officially joined the Strategic Partner Stream of the Pacific Islands Forum, as confirmed by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. He described this as a significant advancement that will enhance collaboration between India and the Pacific region. The announcement occurred during the India-FIPIC Foreign Ministers’ meeting held on September 21, 2026, at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, coinciding with the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly.

Review of Bilateral Initiatives and Progress

During the meeting, Minister Jaishankar assessed the progress made since the third FIPIC Summit in 2023. He highlighted ongoing development partnerships under the initiative and the India-UN Development Partnership Fund. The projects aligned with both frameworks demonstrate India’s commitment to improving livelihoods, enhancing capacity, and fostering sustainable development. Specific areas of focus included healthcare, renewable energy, connectivity, technology, and education.

Jaishankar expressed satisfaction in receiving a communication from Baron Waqa, the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, confirming India’s new strategic partnership status. He noted that this milestone is likely to further strengthen the collaborative ties between India and the Pacific Islands. He remarked on the positive implications of this development, indicating confidence in its potential to enhance cooperation further.

India’s initiatives in the Pacific region have shown substantial progress, with a notable mention of the construction of a 100-bedded super-speciality hospital in Fiji. Additionally, he detailed requests received from 12 member states for 20 units of sea ambulances, with an optimistic projection of delivering them by March 2027. He also announced plans for an artificial limb fitment camp in Fiji next month, aimed to assist approximately 650 patients.

Sustainable Development and Capacity Building

India has completed significant initiatives, including the solarisation of 2,800 households across 14 Pacific Island nations and the training of 70 women as solar engineers. Minister Jaishankar emphasised India’s respect for and support of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, a long-term vision for sustainable development in the area. This reflects India’s commitment to aligning its projects with regional goals.

In a recent post on X, Jaishankar reiterated that India’s approach toward the Pacific has always been driven by demand, development orientation, and a focus on the community’s needs. He stated that the country’s development projects in the Pacific Islands synergise with a shared commitment to bolstering livelihoods and promoting sustainable practices. Furthermore, he reported advancements on the Action Plan introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Jaishankar acknowledged the challenges posed by El Niño to the Pacific Island nations and reiterated India’s readiness to assist in mitigating its negative impacts. He underscored the significance of cooperation in space and research regarding sustainable coastal and ocean management. He also encouraged member countries to participate in the International Solar Alliance, as well as the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, both of which are actively working on various projects.

The meeting ultimately served to appraise recent developments while also aiming to broaden India’s developmental engagement with the Pacific Islands. This new partnership aligns with India’s established commitment to fostering ties and supporting development in the Pacific region, thus marking a pivotal moment in bilateral relations. Through these initiatives, India plans to continue enhancing its role as a strategic partner in the region, contributing to both immediate and long-term developmental goals.
