Hanuman Jayanti 2026: Guidelines for Fasting and Rituals

The CSR Journal Magazine

Hanuman Jayanti in 2026 is set to be celebrated on April 1, coinciding with the Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar. This day holds significant importance for devotees who honor Lord Hanuman, seeking his blessings for strength and protection. Observances typically involve temple visits, fasting, and adherence to a sattvik lifestyle.

Food Guidelines

Maintaining a sattvik diet is essential on Hanuman Jayanti. Devotees are encouraged to avoid specific food items, including non-vegetarian products, eggs, onion, garlic, as well as alcohol, smoking, and fermented foods. Suitable foods include fruits, milk, yogurt, nuts, and dishes made from sabudana, kuttu, and singhara. Simple home-cooked meals that exclude onion and garlic are also recommended.

Fasting Practices

Fasting is a common practice on this day and is deemed auspicious. Various types of fasting may be observed, such as the Nirjala vrat, which involves abstaining from food and water, though it is advisable only for those in good health. The Phalahar vrat permits fruits, milk, and light foods, while the one-meal vrat allows a simple vegetarian meal after the puja. Observers should begin their day with a sankalp (intention) after bathing, maintain cleanliness, and avoid negative emotions like anger and gossip. The fast typically concludes after the evening aarti with a modest meal.

Mantras and Prayers

Prayer is integral to the celebrations of Hanuman Jayanti. Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa is a common practice, often repeated multiple times, typically 108 times. Devotees also chant the mantras “Om Shri Hanumate Namah” and “Om Anjaneyaya Vidmahe Vayuputraya Dhimahi, Tanno Hanumant Prachodayat.” The chant “Jai Shri Ram” is frequently used, as Lord Hanuman is revered as the greatest devotee of Lord Rama. Reading the Sundarkand or Bajrang Baan is also prevalent among devotees.

Temple Rituals

Visiting temples during Hanuman Jayanti is essential, with morning prayers performed ideally during Brahma Muhurta. Evening aarti holds importance, especially for those observing a fast. Many devotees choose to participate in temple rituals during both morning and evening.

Conduct During Observance

In addition to food restrictions, the behavior of devotees is also significant. Activities to avoid include arguments, anger, harmful speech, and negative thinking. Instead, individuals are encouraged to engage in charitable acts, help the needy, and maintain a calm, positive attitude throughout the day.

Significance of Hanuman Jayanti

Hanuman Jayanti embodies themes of discipline, devotion, and inner strength. The day motivates individuals to live simply, engage in prayer, and assist others. Even minor acts of kindness performed with sincerity are greatly valued in this observance.
