Google Announces Changes to Gemini AI Access Starting October 9

The CSR Journal Magazine

Google has revealed that significant changes to the accessibility of its Gemini AI will come into effect on October 9, 2026. The update will delineate the types of AI models available based on the user’s subscription plan, marking a shift in how both free and paid users can interact with Gemini. The company advised that this update will particularly affect those using personal accounts without an AI subscription.

According to a support statement by Google, individuals without an AI subscription will experience a restricted selection of AI models. The modifications aim to streamline access and clarify the benefits of upgraded plans for users seeking enhanced capabilities.

Subscription Plans and Model Availability

The revised model structure will restrict free users of Gemini to smaller Flash-Lite models. Users subscribed to the AI Plus plan, which costs Rs 399 per month in India, will gain access to both Flash-Lite and Flash AI models. However, these subscribers will not be able to utilise the advanced Gemini Pro models, such as Gemini 3 Pro, under the new framework.

Those wishing to unlock the full potential of Gemini, including its larger and more capable models, will need to subscribe to either the Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra plans. The AI Pro subscription is priced at Rs 1,950 monthly, while the AI Ultra option starts at Rs 6,500 per month. Both premium plans will maintain access to all existing models, including Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro variants.

Google has stated that additional notifications will be sent via email to AI Plus subscribers, detailing the exact nature of these changes and their implementation dates. This structured communication aims to assist users in understanding their new options and limitations.

Introduction of Effort Levels in the Gemini App

The effort levels are designed to enhance the models’ efficiency in completing tasks and providing comprehensive responses. However, users should note that opting for higher effort levels will consume a greater portion of their usage limits. Currently, Gemini features a simpler extended thinking option that is geared towards solving complex problems.

This increased customisation aligns the Gemini application more closely with options available in Google’s other AI platforms, such as Google AI Studio and Antigravity. These enhancements indicate a forward-thinking approach by Google to improve user experience and engagement with AI technology.

Implications of Recent AI Developments

These updates follow shortly after Google announced its latest AI model, Gemini 4 Argon, described as the most potent AI model the company has developed to date. At present, Argon is being made available to selected partners as part of a limited rollout, sparking interest in its capabilities and potential applications.

The introduction of Gemini 4 Argon reflects Google’s commitment to advancing its AI offerings amid growing competition in the sector. As these changes come into play, users will need to navigate their subscription options carefully to maximise their use of the Gemini platform.

Overall, Google’s modifications to the Gemini AI landscape are significant, as they affect users’ access to advanced AI models and introduce new features intended to enhance the overall user experience. With these updates, Google aims to provide clearer distinctions between subscription tiers while continuing to innovate in the AI space.
