Gaurav Gogoi Criticises Himanta Biswa Sarma Over FIR Against Pawan Khera

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Assam Congress president, Gaurav Gogoi, has sharply criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in light of an FIR filed by Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, against Pawan Khera. Gogoi claimed that Sarma is exhibiting signs of panic and desperation in response to recent allegations regarding the Chief Minister’s family. According to Gogoi, the CM did not anticipate the rapid dissemination of these reports, which he indicated have caused significant distress.

Gogoi stated that the CM has been visibly affected by the situation, suggesting that his emotional state is evident in his reactions and public statements. He further maintained that loud assertions from Sarma cannot redefine the truth, nor can the power to conduct investigations alter the veracity of the claims made by Khera. He emphasized that such dramatic responses are indicative of insecurity on the part of the Chief Minister.

Escalation of Political Tensions in Assam

The exchange between Gogoi and Sarma comes amid growing political tensions between the Assam Congress and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This political friction has escalated following a ruling by the Telangana High Court, which granted anticipatory bail to Pawan Khera. This legal development pertains to a case initiated by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma in relation to various allegations surrounding passport and property disclosures.

In a bid to solidify his claims, Gogoi alleged that Sarma is attempting to intimidate journalists and political adversaries, portraying such actions as an indicator of political pressure. He accused the Chief Minister of making threats towards the media and asserted that a true leader would approach the situation with confidence rather than escalating it into a state of frenzy.

The Congress’s position reflects their commitment to addressing what they perceive as an authoritarian approach by the incumbent government, most notably in terms of how dissenting voices are being treated. Gogoi’s statements suggest that the Congress party will continue to challenge the ruling party on these grounds.

Sarma Denies Allegations and Vows to Pursue Legal Action

In response to the allegations levied by Khera, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has firmly denied claims regarding his wife holding multiple passports or owning properties in Dubai. The Sarma family has referred to these accusations as ‘fabrications’ allegedly generated by foreign social media entities. Sarma has publicly expressed resolve to pursue legal channels in order to counter these claims, which he characterises as serious defamations.

The Chief Minister has been vocal about his suspicions regarding the origins of the allegations. He has suggested that they might have been orchestrated with the involvement of well-known political figures, including Rahul Gandhi, asserting that misinformation is circulating with malicious intent. Sarma’s remarks underscore a defensive posture as he navigates this complicated political landscape.

Further compounding the situation, Sarma claimed that Khera has evaded law enforcement authorities by relocating to Hyderabad amidst ongoing investigations. He stressed that the legal process will unfold according to established protocols. This assertion reinforces the Chief Minister’s commitment to uphold legal standards while also presenting the case as an issue of political intrigue.
