The Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has reached out to US President Donald Trump, requesting a temporary suspension of tariffs on Colombian goods. This appeal comes in the aftermath of a significant earthquake that resulted in the loss of at least 289 lives. De La Espriella highlighted the need for such a measure to assist businesses grappling with the catastrophic impacts of the disaster.

Taking office recently, just before the 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck on August 15, De La Espriella aims to reinforce his relationship with Trump, who had previously endorsed him in Colombia’s recent presidential election. Following the earthquake’s occurrence, which was officially declared a natural disaster, the president has been actively engaging with international partners for support and relief.

In a recent communication posted on X, de la Espriella mentioned that he thanked Trump for the assistance the US had provided in response to the calamity. He reiterated his request for a pause on the high tariffs impacting Colombian exports, emphasising the dire situation faced by local businesses.

Extent of the Earthquake’s Damage

The earthquake severely affected western regions of Colombia, particularly the cities of Pereira, Cali, and Quibdo. The destruction extended along the Pacific coast, where damage was particularly intense. The Colombian government reported 143 individuals as missing, while estimates from other civilian sources suggest the figure could be considerably higher.

According to official figures, the disaster has left 3,937 people injured and resulted in the destruction of 14,705 homes, in addition to damaging over 81,536 structures. Various agencies continue to tally the overall human and material toll caused by the earthquake, which originated in Choco, recognized as one of the nation’s poorest regions.

In the city of Cali, efforts are ongoing to locate more than 70 residents reported as missing. Local officials maintain that search operations continue, nourished by a sense of hope despite the passing of crucial hours since the quake struck. Mayor Alejandro Eder expressed optimism, stating, “Miracles do happen,” as teams remain dedicated to rescue operations, seeking to save lives amid the wreckage.

US Response and Humanitarian Aid

The United States has reportedly committed to providing aid amounting to USD 26.5 million to assist with the earthquake’s fallout. This assistance includes provisions of food, shelter, and health supplies, aimed at supporting the affected populations. However, the Trump administration has yet to respond directly to President de la Espriella’s request for tariff relief.

As Colombia continues to grapple with the aftermath of the earthquake, the government is prioritising both immediate disaster response and long-term recovery efforts. President de la Espriella’s call for tariff suspension aligns with the broader strategy to ensure that the economy stabilises amid ongoing challenges stemming from the natural disaster.
