The UP government’s consistent efforts and quick, fast response of these ambulances has led to a significant drop in maternal and infant mortality rates across the state. Notably, the response time of the ambulance fleet has also seen notable improvement, ensuring patients receive medical assistance when it matters most with immediate effect.

Mission Director of the National Health Mission (NHM), Dr. Pinky Jowel, shared that under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, 4,845 ambulances are currently operating across Uttar Pradesh for emergency services. These include 2,270 under the 102 service, 375 under ALS (Advanced Life Support), and 2,200 under the 108 Emergency Medical Transport Service.

Over 3.57 crore people saved

According to reports, in the last eight years, the 108 ambulance service has helped over 3.57 crore (3,57,24,745) people in emergencies. One of the biggest achievements has been the reduction in average response time from 28.12 minutes in 2014 to just 7.25 minutes in 2025.

Meanwhile, the 102 ambulance service, dedicated to expecting mothers and newborns, has helped over 9.62 crore (9,62,48,151) patients in the same period. Its response time has also improved from 19.10 minutes in 2014 to 6.58 minutes in 2025.

The improvements made by the Yogi government have played a major role in reducing maternal and infant mortality in the state. According to the Sample Registration Survey (SRS), the maternal mortality rate dropped from 216 per lakh (2015–17) to 167 per lakh (2018–20). Similarly, the infant mortality rate decreased from 23 per 1,000 in 2016 to 21 per 1,000 in 2022.

In addition to this, the Mission Director stated that the government conducts the SRS (Sample Registration Survey) every two years. However, the report for the survey conducted after 2020 has not yet been released. The director also mentioned that based on the previous survey results and the improved performance of the 102 ambulance service. She further claimed that it is certain that the upcoming report will show a further reduction in mortality rates.

The ALS ambulance service

Not just that, the ALS ambulance service has benefited over 7.14 lakh (7,14,552) critical patients. Recently, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath added 125 new ALS ambulances to the fleet. The ambulance’s response time has also seen major progress in the state. It improved from 30 minutes in 2014 to 6.31 minutes by 2025.

Furthermore, the Yogi government has integrated real-time monitoring technology to ensure efficiency. This technology tracks ambulance locations and response times live. This allows for quick action in case of any delays.

RTI: Government spent over ₹12 Lakh on Aurangzeb’s Tomb in a Decade

Over Rs 12 lakh has been spent by the government on the upkeep of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb over the past decade. The information was revealed through a Right to Information (RTI) request where there was a sharp increase in government spending on the tomb of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb over the past two decades.

The RTI was filed by Pune-based activist Prafful Sarda. He stated that The information, disclosed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), highlights a sharp rise in annual spending on the monument, located in Khuldabad, Maharashtra.

Findings of the RTI

According to the information, the lowest expenditure on the tomb was done in the year 2005–06 with Rs 1,395. Similarly, in the year 2024-2025, Rs 5,35,988 was spent over the maintenance of the tomb. Between the financial year 2004 and 2014, a total of Rs 2,54,128 was spent for the renovation.

However, these figures rapidly increased to nearly sixfold in the subsequent period from 2014 to 2025. The amount the government spent over the maintenance of this tomb reached to Rs 12,24,104. According to the official data after the year 2013 the annual expenses for maintenance, security, renovation, and restoration of the Aurangzeb tomb have seen a dramatic increase.

Activist Prafful Sarda’s Statement

Prafful Sarda, commented on the findings, calling for transparency and accountability in heritage conservation practices. “This data raises serious questions about resource allocation and the changing priorities in preserving India’s monuments,” he stated.

“Instead of allocating increasing funds to preserve the legacy of a cruel Mughal emperor, both the state and central governments should prioritize the conservation of forts and historical monuments built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and other revered Maratha leaders,” Sarda emphasized.

History of Aurangzeb’s tomb

The Tomb of Aurangzeb is located in Khuldabad, Aurangabad district, Maharashtra, India. In notable contrast to other Mughal tombs, which are large monuments of Mughal architecture, including the Taj Mahal, at his own direction Aurangzeb is buried in an unmarked grave at the complex of the dargah or shrine of Sheikh Zainuddin.

The Tomb has become a symbol of political contention due to Aurangzeb’s historical legacy despite the simplicity of the tomb. This majorly includes his execution of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and the destruction of Hindu temples during his reign.

The Row over Aurangzeb’s tomb

In March 2025, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) submitted a memorandum to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. They also demanded the removal of the site from the list of protected monuments. “Any memorial of Aurangzeb is a symbol of pain and slavery, so the grave should be demolished completely,” it said.

Nagpur violence

Following the VHP’s demand on 17 March 2025, communal violence erupted in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The right-wing Hindu organizations demanded the removal of the tomb. The unrest began after members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal staged a protest. During the protest they burned an effigy of Aurangzeb and chanted slogans. Over 105 individuals were arrested by the police.

CM Fadnavis blames ‘Chhaava’

Following the uproar in Nagpur Maharashtra Chief Minister Fadnavis blamed the movie ‘Chhaava’ for the Nagpur violence. “After that (the movie), people’s emotions have been reignited. The anger against Aurangzeb is being exhibited in a big way,” he said. The film ‘Chhaava’ starring Vicky Kaushal, is a historical action film based on the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire.

Meanwhile, the RTI findings add a new layer to ongoing discussions about the legacy of historical figures and the public funds allocated for their commemoration.

Airlines reroute international Flights after Pakistan shuts Airspace for India following Pahalgam Terror Attack

Indian carriers announced on April 24 that their international flights to or from North America, UK, Europe, and the Middle East will now move through alternative extended route after Pakistan closed its airspace for Indian airline.

The decision comes after the Pakistan government announced immediate closure of its airspace to all Indian-owned and Indian-operated airlines following the Pahalgam terror attack which claimed 26 lives.

With Pakistan closing off its airspace to Indian carriers, airlines now face longer durations and higher fuel burn for westward international flights taking off from north India — factors that could lead to a hike in airfares. Airspace restrictions are likely to result in delays and rescheduling of flights on multiple international routes operated by Indian airlines.

Travel Advisory shared by Indian carriers

Air India and IndiGo issued updates on social media offering assurances to affected passengers.

“Due to the announced restriction of Pakistan airspace for all Indian airlines, it is expected that some Air India flights to or from North America, UK, Europe, and Middle East will take an alternative extended route,” Tata Group airline Air India said in an X post.

IndiGo shared on X, “Due to the sudden announcement of air space closure by Pakistan, a few of our international flights are being impacted. We understand the inconvenience this may cause and our teams are doing their best to help you reach your destination at the earliest.”

“A few of our international flights are being impacted. We understand the inconvenience this may cause and our teams are doing their best to help you reach your destination at the earliest. We encourage you to check the latest flight status. If your flight is impacted, please explore flexible rebooking options, or claim a refund through our website,” it further said.

A SpiceJet spokesperson told media that the airline’s flights to the UAE from North India will now operate via alternative routes. As a result, these flights will carry additional fuel to account for the longer flying time. However, the spokesperson clarified that there is no significant impact on SpiceJet’s flight schedules.

“In light of the recent tragic incident in Pahalgam, we are closely monitoring the situation using all available resources. On the morning of 24th April 2025, we proactively decided to reroute any flights expected to fly over Pakistan airspace as a precautionary measure. This has no significant impact to our operations and will not cause any inconvenience to our passengers. We will continue to assess the situation daily and make any necessary adjustments to our flight operations to maintain the highest levels of safety that are central to our operations at all times,” Akasa Air said in a statement.

Pakistan closes airspace for India’s airlines following Pahalgam terror attack

A day after the Pahalgam terror attack, the Pakistan government announced immediate closure of its airspace to all Indian-owned and Indian-operated airlines. Pakistan also suspended all trade with India, including goods passing through the country to or from third countries. As per a report by Reuters, the country has also objected to India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty.

The announcements were made after a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to formulate the country’s response to India’s move to suspend the Indus Water Treaty and downgrade diplomatic ties after the Pahalgam terror attack. The meeting was attended by key ministers and the three services chiefs.

Pahalgam Terror Attack: India puts pressure on Pakistan in retaliation

In response to the Pahalgam attack, India has taken a series of strong retaliatory measures, including the closure of Pakistan’s airspace. On Thursday, India officially suspended the Indus Water Treaty of 1960, signaling a hardening of its stance.

India closed the Attari Integrated Check Post and revoked Pakistan’s access to the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme, instructing Pakistani nationals holding SAARC visas to leave India within 48 hours.

Why the Supreme Court Issued a Stern Warning to Rahul Gandhi Over Savarkar Remark

The Supreme Court has issued a strong caution to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over controversial remarks made about freedom fighter V.D. Savarkar, during a public address in Maharashtra’s Akola district in 2022. The court, while staying the trial court proceedings against Gandhi for now, warned that any repetition of such comments could lead to suo motu action.

Rahul Gandhi made contentious statements during his Bharat Jodo Yatra on November 17, 2022, referring to Savarkar as a “British servant” and accusing him of receiving a pension from the colonial government. The remarks led to a defamation complaint filed by a resident of Lucknow, Nripendra Pandey, who alleged that the comments were part of a deliberate attempt to tarnish Savarkar’s image.

A two-judge bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Manmohan delivered a scathing response during Thursday’s hearing. Though Gandhi’s legal team insisted there was no intention to incite division, the court expressed deep disapproval. “Freedom fighters gave us our independence. Let’s not insult them,” the court said, pointing out the sensitivity of making such statements in regions where Savarkar is widely respected.

Justice Datta Slams Gandhi

Referring specifically to the cultural context of Maharashtra, Justice Datta asked, “Why would your client say such things in a place where Savarkar is almost worshipped?” He further emphasised that carelessness in public speeches could inspire similar irresponsible remarks against other national figures. “Tomorrow, someone might claim Mahatma Gandhi was also a British servant,” he remarked.

Rahul Gandhi was not present at the hearing, as he was visiting Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district to meet those injured in the recent Pahalgam terror attack. The court, nonetheless, did not hold back. “This is not the way to speak about those who gave us freedom,” Justice Datta said, calling Gandhi’s remarks “irresponsible.”

The trial court that originally issued the summons observed that Gandhi’s remarks promoted disharmony and carried the potential to stir public unrest. He was summoned under Sections 153A (promoting enmity) and 505 (public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code. The court had also fined Gandhi Rs 200 for skipping a hearing last month.

SC Questions Gandhi’s Intent

During the Supreme Court hearing, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Gandhi, stressed that the statement lacked malicious intent and should not be interpreted as an attempt to create enmity. However, the bench firmly responded: “Why make such a statement at all, if there was no intent to provoke?”

While the apex court agreed to temporarily halt the legal proceedings, it clearly warned that any further derogatory comments about India’s freedom fighters would not be tolerated. “We won’t need a petition next time. We will take it up on our own,” the bench stated.

The matter has been listed for a further hearing in eight weeks, and notices have been issued to both the Uttar Pradesh government and the complainant.

Security Forces Demolish Homes of Pahalgam Attack Terrorists

The crackdown on those responsible for the recent Pahalgam attack intensified as the houses of two Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists Adil Hussain Thokar and Asif Sheikh were destroyed in separate security operations across south Kashmir. Authorities confirmed that Thokar’s house in Bijbehara was demolished using explosive devices, while Sheikh’s property in Tral was flattened by a bulldozer late Thursday night.

The attack that rocked Baisaran, a renowned meadow near Pahalgam often dubbed “mini Switzerland,” claimed 26 lives, including one Nepali citizen. Survivors of the attack described the assailants dressed in camouflage and armed with assault rifles emerging from the surrounding pine forests.

Adil Thokar has emerged as a critical figure in the case. Police believe he facilitated the movements of the Pakistani attackers through the terrain, having received training across the border after travelling to Pakistan via the Attari-Wagah route in 2018. Upon his return to Jammu and Kashmir last year, Thokar became a key local enabler for the foreign militants.

2 Among 4 Terrorists Identified as Pakistani Nationals

Officials have also identified the two Pakistani nationals suspected of having directly executed the attack. Known by aliases Ali Bhai and Suleman, their real names are Ali Talha and Hashim Musa, respectively. Both are believed to be experienced militants affiliated with the LeT and have been active in the Kashmir Valley for over a year. Musa has reportedly been linked to several previous attacks targeting both civilians and security personnel.

In a major development, Anantnag Police has released sketches of the trio and offered a Rs 20 lakh reward for information leading to the arrest of any of them. The most-wanted notice also includes details about their operations, with investigators suggesting that the attackers used body-mounted cameras to document the massacre, and had stocked up on medical kits and dry fruits evidence of detailed logistical planning.

The killings have triggered a serious diplomatic rupture between New Delhi and Islamabad. Following an emergency security meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India unveiled a set of stringent measures against Pakistan. These included the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, the closure of the Attari land transit point, visa cancellations for Pakistani citizens, and the downgrading of diplomatic ties. In retaliation, Pakistan barred Indian-owned aircraft from its airspace and expelled Indian military personnel from its embassy.

Explosives Found at Suspects’ Homes

Officials also revealed that during the operations at Thokar and Sheikh’s homes, planted explosives detonated, further supporting suspicions of the terrorists’ elaborate preparations. A search effort continues in the region, with several overground workers and local sympathisers being questioned to unearth further details about the network that facilitated the massacre.

As investigations deepen and search operations intensify, security agencies remain focused on capturing the surviving perpetrators. The Pahalgam tragedy has not only exposed a sophisticated terror plot but has also reopened conversations about cross-border militancy and the fragile peace in the valley.
