CSR: #StopFoodWastage Movement Launched With “Ek Vichaar” Campaign

CSR: #StopFoodWastage Movement Launched With “Ek Vichaar” Campaign
Wastage of edible items is an issue that plagues Indian households and businesses alike. As per the UN Environment Programme’s latest report the per capita food wastage figure in India is 55 kg per year whereas on the other end of the spectrum more than 13% of India’s total population suffers from malnutrition. This mind-boggling contrast has long been a serious issue and needs to be addressed collectively by all sections of the society.
Ram Bandhu, a leading food products brand, has partnered with the volunteer-based surplus food redistribution organisation Robin Hood Army, to start the noble “Stop Food Wastage Movement” to spread awareness amongst the Indian masses regarding the prevention of food wastage.
As a part of this initiative, brand Ram Bandhu has released a thought provoking short film, aptly titled “Ek Vichaar”, with a compelling storyline highlighting the said disparity which forces the viewers to contemplate the way in which edible items are consumed and disposed of in their daily lives. The story depicts a typical Indian household with young children who end up wasting food on several occasions without realising its gravity; and it concludes with an impactful message about prevention of food wastage.
Organisations like Robin Hood Army assist with the proper channeling of surplus food to the needy; and as depicted in the film resorting to the assistance of such organisations and simple acts of feeding ones’ leftovers to the society’s stray animals, in a non-disruptive manner, are just some of the actions which can actually go a long way in tackling this significant yet often ignored issue.
Speaking about this social awareness movement the marketing head of Empire Spices & Foods Ltd. (ESFL), the company behind brand Ram Bandhu, Mr. Bhanudas Gundkar said, “Being one of the leading food FMCG brands we felt that it is our duty to bring to prominence the issue of food wastage prevalent in our society and suggest practical solutions which can make a difference. Hence we came up with this short film”.
The film is a digital-only release and stars well-known Maharashtrian actor Chinmay Udgirkar. It has been produced by Amaze Productions and conceptualised by DigiChefs.
Madhuri Dixit-Nene is the brand ambassador of Ram Bandhu’s range of spices, pickles and papads.
ESFL’s brand portfolio includes the brands Ram Bandhu, RBM, Temptin’ and Zaiqa. These are loved by the masses for the taste, variants and convenience that they bring. The company has its presence in the markets across 14 states in India in more than half a million retail shops. The company also has been exporting its products to countries like US, UK, Canada, Spain, France, New Zealand, Qatar, Dubai,Germany, Netherlands, Luxembourg among others.

National Unity Day 2024: Lessons to Learn From the Life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

National Unity Day or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is celebrated on October 31 every year since 2014 to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of India. Popularly known as the “Iron Man of India”, Sardar played a crucial role in the unification of India after India gained independence.
In the months preceding the Independence of India and following it, Patel worked tirelessly to bring 565 princely states into the fold of the Union of India. He used various tactics including diplomacy, personal relation as well as police action for the unification of India. For his incredible efforts, the government of India introduced the National Unity Day in 2014.
The Home Ministry in an official statement said that the day “will provide an opportunity to re-affirm the inherent strength and resilience of our nation to withstand the actual and potential threats to the unity, integrity and security of our country.”
Sardar Patel was a dynamic leader who had only national interest in his heart. He was the kind of leader who worked harder than his followers. He had strong ideals that he always adhered to. Following are some of the lessons we all need to learn from his life:

Interest of Nation Over Self

Sardar Patel was a leader who kept the interest of the nation before anything else. Before the formation of the constituent assembly in 1946, the Indian National Congress was going in election internally to choose their president. It was preconceived that whoever becomes the president of the congress in that year, will be the head of the interim government and will also be the first Prime Minister of India.
The president was to be elected by the Congress Pradesh Committee members only. Of 16 committees, 13 elected for Patel as the president. However, Nehru’s insistence to stay at the top of the government and Gandhi’s support to the same caused him to take a decision to step back from his claim for the government head, even though he deserved it as per the procedure. This shows his commitment to do right by the country even at the cost of his self-interest.

Large-heartedness in Governance

Patel, who was equipped with the army and police did not so it fit to forcefully acquire the princely states for as long as he could help. He convinced the rulers of the princely states to join the Indian union by using diplomatic methods.
During the unification of princely states, the main concern of the rulers was that of loss of their revenue and loss of their role in governance. Patel addressed these concerns by providing the rulers with privy-purse to assure them that they would be looked after in the Union of India. In addition to that, he appointed many of these rulers as governors, even the ones that opposed the joining of the union. This large-heartedness shown by Patel towards the rulers was a major reason why India was unified without any bloodshed.

Hard work and Grit

Sardar Patel came from a farmer family. He was not from a privileged background like Nehru or even Gandhi. He worked hard to study law and practised as a lawyer locally. He wished to go to England to study further. He applied to a law program in England and was accepted to study there. However, the documents mentioned only his initials instead of his full name. His brother, Vitthalbhai who went with same initials claimed the documents and went to England to study further in Sardar’s place.
Sardar bore expenses of his brother as well as his family during this time, even though he himself was not that well established. He worked hard to support his family and eventually after years, was able to himself go to England to complete his education.

Empowering Women

Patel believed that a nation cannot prosper if its women are miserable. He said, “Women in one way are extremely courageous. Men do not endure the miseries to the extent women do. So long as women are not sufficiently educated and inculcated with national spirit, till then there will be no prosperity.”
Life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is a yardstick to measure all the qualities of hardwork, determination, and leadership in oneself. Not only was he a strong leader, but was also loved among his subjects and followers. On 145th Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, let us all take a moment to remember him and strive to follow his footsteps in the love of our country.

NTPC Ltd sets up Agri-waste based 10 TPD Integrated Torrefaction and Pelletization Plant at NETRA

NTPC Ltd sets up Agri-waste based 10 TPD Integrated Torrefaction and Pelletization Plant at NETRA
New Delhi, India: NETRA, the R&D wing of NTPC Ltd, and LWP Biocoal LLP, a Startup registered under GoI, have developed and setup a 10 TPD Integrated Torrefaction and Pelletization Plant for demonstration of indigenous technology and promotion of manufacturing of torrefied pellets in the country. It may be mentioned that agricultural residue-based biomass co-firing, a carbon-neutral fuel, is recognized by the UNFCCC as a technology for reducing GHG emissions.
In May 2021, the Ministry of Power, Government of India, launched the ‘National Mission on Use of Biomass’ in Coal-Based Thermal Power Plants. NTPC is already actively utilizing non-torrefied biomass for co-firing in pulverized coal (PC)-fired boilers. To date, a maximum of 10% by weight co-firing has been achieved using non-torrefied biomass pellets without any retrofitting. However, to facilitate large-scale biomass usage, torrefaction and pelletization are essential, as torrefied biomass pellets offer higher energy density and properties closer to coal.
This opens a new avenue for NTPC Green Energy Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC in the domain of renewable energy.

CSR Initiative touch over 5,000 Lives in promoting mammography camps in rural areas in Maharashtra

CSR Initiative touch over 5,000 Lives in promoting mammography camps in rural areas in Maharashtra
Finolex Industries Limited (FIL) and Mukul Madhav Foundation (MMF) mark 10 years of collaboration in their ground-breaking women’s healthcare initiative by promoting women’s healthcare through biannual mammography camps in Pune. Since the initiative’s launch in 2014, these camps have provided free cancer screenings to over 5,000 women from marginalized sections of society, continuing uninterrupted—even during the pandemic. In cases where abnormalities are detected, FIL and MMF provide thorough follow-up care and offer financial assistance for further treatment when required.
Early detection is crucial in the treatment of any cancer. Since 2014, 0.5% to 1% in approximately every 50 women in Ratnagiri have been identified with precancerous or cancerous conditions through mammography, colposcopy and Pap smear screenings conducted during health camps.  Also, early treatment of vaginitis and cervicitis can significantly reduce the risk of developing cervical and vaginal cancers respectively. This crucial initiative has considerably decreased the likelihood of cancer development and progression.
This joint endeavour of MMF and FIL strives to empower women in rural areas to undergo mammography screenings, regardless of the stigma associated with such examinations. By providing support and encouragement, MMF and FIL have aimed to nurture a sense of independence among women in making informed decisions about their health.
This initiative offers a range of comprehensive medical services, including:
– Mammography, Sonography, Sono-Mammography, and Pap-smear tests
– Abdomen and blood tests (CBC, blood sugar)
– Gynaecological consultations
– Physician, dietician consultations and follow-ups
The journey began with the guidance of Prashanti Cancer Care, Pune, and Finolex Industries donation of a mammography machine to Chirayu Hospital, Ratnagiri, and was later moved to Parkar Hospital, Ratnagiri. Dr. Koppiker of Prashanti Cancer Care Mission introduced MMF to breast cancer awareness programs through their 2014 marathon for breast cancer awareness. In addition, the camps have been conducted twice a year, aligned with International Women’s Day and Navratri, to maximize participation. After five years of consistent service in the region, the venue shifted to Walawalkar Hospital, Dervan, in 2019, ensuring wider access for women from the southern talukas of Ratnagiri District.

Expanding the Reach of Cancer Awareness and Detection in Pune

After observing the success of the cancer detection camp in Ratnagiri, where it became clear how crucial such initiatives are in preventing cancer, FIL and MMF were motivated to expand their efforts in Pune. In response to requests from various communities in and around the city, and after receiving numerous applications for support related to cancer treatment, in January 2023, FIL and MMF donated a mammography machine to Bharati Hospital, Pune. MMF has expanded its efforts by organizing awareness sessions and encouraging women from various communities to access these facilities at subsidized costs. FIL and MMF have also extended cancer care efforts by conducting oral cancer screening camps for contract workers, and supporting ASHA workers, ANM nurses with breast cancer awareness and self-examination training, in collaboration with Prashanti Cancer Care Mission, Pune. Starting January 2024, over 1,000 women have already benefited from these monthly mammography camps for Rag pickers, Ladies Police and their families, Self-Help-Groups, Women from urban slums.
Mrs. Ritu Prakash Chhabria, Managing Trustee of Mukul Madhav Foundation, states, “Our decade-long commitment to women’s health has made a significant impact on thousands of lives across Maharashtra. We’ve not only provided free cancer screenings but have also focused on comprehensive women’s health services, including gynaecological consultations and essential tests. We’re proud to continue expanding our reach, from our initial efforts in Ratnagiri to our recent work in Pune, making a tangible difference in communities across Maharashtra. Our collaboration with healthcare professionals, including the initial guidance from Prashanti Cancer Care Pune, has been instrumental in the success of this initiative. As we look to the future, we remain committed to raising awareness about early cancer detection and improving healthcare access for women from all walks of life.”
Mrs Gayatri Pawar from Ratnagiri was one of the beneficiaries of the camp. She was detected with breast cancer in the camp and was guided by MMF for specialist consultation in Pune. Mrs Pawar states “With FIL and MMF’s support, I was referred to a specialist in Pune who recommended surgery and chemotherapy. However, due to financial difficulties, I was unable to proceed with the advised treatment. It was at this critical time that MMF stepped in once again, offering financial assistance for my surgery. With their support, I successfully underwent surgery and 15 chemotherapy cycles. Today, I am completely cured and living a healthy and happy life. I am deeply grateful for the timely intervention and support provided by FIL and MMF as quoted in 2016.”
FIL and MMF team has demonstrated exceptional dedication by extending support beyond traditional aid. And actively reach out to marginalized communities, including rag-pickers, BAIF Development Research Foundation women, women working in post office, and other underserved groups, often overlooked by mainstream support. Bothe the organisations approach involves not only providing assistance but also genuine outreach, offering transportation, refreshments, and support. This strategy aims to empower individuals, encouraging them to bring their families and communities into the fold. By fostering awareness and building trust at the grassroots level, one person and one community at a time, the team is making a significant impact.  The FIL and MMF partnership showcases the potential of private sector engagement in addressing critical healthcare needs.  As FIL and MMF enter their second decade of collaboration, both organizations remain committed to improving women’s health and raising awareness about the importance of early cancer detection.
