Bihar teacher recruitment scam: 24,000 might lose jobs over forged documents, ineligibility

Bihar teacher recruitment scam: 24,000 might lose jobs over forged documents, ineligibility
Bihar teacher recruitment scam: 24,000 might lose jobs over forged documents, ineligibility
In a shocking development, a massive scam has come to light regarding the recruitment of government school teachers in Bihar. At least 24,000 candidates in the state are at the risk of losing their jobs. These candidates allegedly became teachers by submitting forged marksheets, education certificates, caste certificates, and without qualifying for the necessary criteria. These teachers were recruited by the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) over the past one year. The procedure to verify the documents submitted by the teachers has been started.
The education department will be taking disciplinary action against these 24,000 teachers. The state government might terminate them from service, recover their salary and register cases against teachers for indulging in malpractices.
A case has already been registered against seven teachers, including five female teachers, in Sitamarhi district for submitting forged documents and adopting unfair means to get the job.

The scam

A large-scale teacher recruitment drive was recently conducted by the state government to fill vacancies in 85,000 schools under which over 2.17 lakh teachers were hired since November 2023. The hiring was done through the Teacher Recruitment Examination (TRE) 1 and 2 conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC).
After the education department conducted enquiries, it has been revealed that at least 4,000 of these teachers possess fake educational degrees, marksheets and certificates, while the other candidates have secured below the 60 per cent score criteria in the CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test).
“We are examining the documents submitted by the recently appointed teachers. Around 20,000 of them do not possess the advertised recruitment criteria of a minimum 60 per cent score in the CTET. Many of them have scores that are around 50 per cent, yet they applied and got selected in the recruitment examination and joined as teachers,” said a senior official from the education department.
“We also detected fake marksheets and certificates submitted by hundreds of teachers. Many of the newly appointed teachers, especially those from other states, have claimed reservation benefits despite not being eligible for them. There have also been cases of the appointed men and women submitting fake caste and residence certificates to claim reservation benefits,” the education department official further informed.

Discrepancy in counselling

The recruitment scam comes after the recent counselling sessions held for 1.87 lakh candidates in the state who qualified the “competency test” to avail the “government employee” status, during which significant discrepancies were observed. Counselling was conducted for a large number of teachers between 1st and 13th December 2023.
After the initial counselling of the successful candidates, many mark sheets raised suspicions, prompting the education department to forward these documents to the relevant universities for further examination.
“The educational and reservation-related documents of a large number of these teachers were never verified. Fake marksheets and degrees are being detected during their counselling,” a senior education department officer informed.
However, counselling was not done for around 42,000 teachers, while over 3,000 were absent. Biometric verification was not completed for more than 10,000 of these candidates. Many teachers who did not participate in the counselling sessions are now under scrutiny.

Delhi Might use Artificial Rain to Combat Air Pollution

Delhi Might use Artificial Rain to Combat Air Pollution
Delhi Might use Artificial Rain to Combat Air Pollution
The Environment Minister of the Government of Delhi, Shri Gopal Rai, has made an announcement revealing plans to combat the air pollution crisis this year with artificial rain. Delhi suffers from extreme air pollution during the winter months, as cold air traps dust, vehicle emissions, and smoke from the stubble burning practice occurring in the states of Punjab and Haryana. This creates a toxic haze in the capital region, which spikes respiratory illnesses.

Tackling Air Pollution by Cloud Seeding

Cloud seeding is a weather modification technique which is aimed at inducing rainfall in a particular region artificially. This is achieved by dispersing substances like silver iodide or salt into the clouds, which in turn, helps in formation of water droplets. This process can help cause rainfall or snowfall in areas that face severe droughts or clear pollution from the air by washing it away from the atmosphere.
Cloud-seeding as a technique to clear Delhi’s Air Pollution was considered last year. However, it was not implemented due to adverse weather conditions. This year, the Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) has reached close to 400. This is extremely dangerous to the public health and well-being. To tackle this, Minister Rai has urged the federal environment minister to expedite the artificial rain process, calling the next 10 days “critical.”

Respiratory Illnesses in Delhi

India just celebrated Diwali wherein the citizens light fire-crackers as part of celebrations. In its wake, the hospitals in the national capital reported a surge in respiratory cases as many people suffered from respiratory issues caused by inhalation of toxic fumes released by crackers. Dr. Prashant Saxena of Fortis Hospital stated that there was a 20-30 per cent rise in patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and bronchitis. C K Birla Hospital in Gurugram also saw over 50 pulmonary patients daily, with some requiring hospitalisation.
According to the University of Chicago’s Energy Policy Institute, such rapid increase in pollution could reduce the life expectancy of South Asian people by more than five years. For many years, Delhi was known to be the most polluted city in the world. This year, while this title has been taken away by Lahore in Pakistan, Delhi still is ranked second in the list.

As a child, Akashdeep Beniwal loved to help his grandparents on the family farm in Punjab where they raised cattle, producing dairy products to feed their local community. Supporting his family gave Akashdeep a deep insight into the highs and lows of running a dairy farm and sparked a curiosity to find new ways to produce food in an environmentally sustainable way.
This curiosity later turned into research as Akashdeep undertook an Agricultural Science degree and then a postgraduate Masters in Dairy Science at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), formerly Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). These studies marked only the beginning in Akashdeep’s journey to uncover new technologies that will significantly change global food production and the way people consume everyday food products.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation, a non-profit organisation focussed on providing unlimited food for education for Government & Government-Aided school children as the implementing partner of PM POSHAN program, is pleased to announce the significant expansion of its partnership with BW LPG India, the nation’s largest owner and operator of Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs). This collaboration signifies a strengthening commitment towards improving children’s nutrition and educational outcomes across India.
Since 2017, BW LPG India has been pivotal in India’s LPG supply chain, accounting for about 25% of the LPG supply into India. As a subsidiary of the global leader BW LPG, the company brings international standards and substantial capabilities to the partnership.
The partnership, initiated with a Memorandum of Understanding in late 2023, designated BW LPG India as the Energy Partner for nine of Akshaya Patra’s centralized kitchens in Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Over four months, this alliance facilitated the preparation of approximately 12 million mid-day meals distributed to children from over 2,200 schools.
Further solidifying their commitment, BW LPG India recently undertook the construction of dining sheds in Bikaner, Rajasthan, enhancing the dining infrastructure for children at two schools. The renewed MOU for the fiscal year 2024-25, encompassing an additional three kitchens, projects the support of nearly 42.7 million midday meals.
Mr Kristian Sorensen, Chairman of the Board of Directors, said, “BW LPG India’s corporate purpose is to deliver energy for a better world, and it has been very rewarding to be the Energy Partner for the Akshaya Patra Foundation. With our specialization in delivering LPG into India, we want to support Akshaya Patra’s energy needs in their central kitchens as they deliver midday meals to children. When we join forces, we can transform lives with energy.”
Mr. Dhananjay Ganjoo, Chief Resource Mobilization & Marketing Officer at The Akshaya Patra Foundation, remarked, “Our collaboration with BW LPG India has been transformational not only in scale but also in the sustainability of our operations. Their continued support underlines a shared vision for a healthier, better-educated generation. The upcoming projects in Odisha, introducing greener, LPG-powered kitchen equipment, mark a significant leap towards environmentally sustainable meal production.”

This partnership also extends to humanitarian efforts, with BW LPG India contributing INR 20,00,000 providing relief kits for 1,667 families, which ensured sustenance for 15-16 days, towards the Assam Flood Relief works initiated by Akshaya Patra. Additionally, a pilot project is underway to convert a briquette boiler to an LPG boiler for a kitchen serving mid-day meals to 580 rural schools in Odisha, requiring an investment of Rs. 2 Cr. This project involves the installation of two dual-fired boilers of Rs 5,225,000. The operational expenses for the first three years are projected to be Rs. 14,515,224, accounting for a 4% increase in meal demand and 7% inflation. This collaboration aims to enhance clean cooking and meal quality for children in need.
As both organizations prepare to implement their newest MOU from October 1, 2024, to March 31, 2026, this venture promises to further leverage cutting-edge technology and resources to support underprivileged children across India, making a direct impact on their daily lives and long-term well-being.
