The Barapullah Phase 3 elevated corridor is set to commence operations on September 29, providing an expedited route between East Delhi and South Delhi while also enhancing connectivity to Noida. This 3.5-km stretch will link Mayur Vihar Phase I with Sarai Kale Khan and integrate seamlessly with the existing Barapullah network. The completion of this project is anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion on major thoroughfares, thus improving the travel experience for commuters traversing between East and South Delhi, along with facilitating access to Noida.

Details of the Corridor’s Route

The Phase 3 segment boasts a four-lane elevated design that establishes a direct connection from Mayur Vihar Phase I to Sarai Kale Khan. In addition to this primary route, it will provide improved access to vital areas such as AIIMS and other significant parts of South Delhi. Upon becoming operational, the corridor will create a continuous nearly 9-km route by linking with the existing Barapullah corridor, allowing commuters to travel faster between East Delhi and South Delhi.

Commuters heading towards AIIMS can expect their travel time to decrease significantly—from approximately 35 to 40 minutes down to about 15 minutes—thanks to the corridor’s elevated and mostly signal-free structure. This improved connectivity is also projected to alleviate congestion on several other roads currently utilised by commuters moving between these regions.

The new corridor has been designed to incorporate multiple entry and exit points to facilitate smoother traffic flow. Additionally, it includes nine access loops that enhance accessibility along the route. Notably, the project will also feature dedicated infrastructure for non-motorised transport, such as pedestrian pathways and cycle tracks, promoting a safe environment for walkers and cyclists alike.

Project Cost and Financial Aspects

The overall expenditure for the Barapullah Phase 3 project is approximately Rs 1,635 crore, as reported in revised estimates. This financial investment is aimed at significantly enhancing road connectivity among East Delhi, Central Delhi, South Delhi, and Noida, while also presenting commuters with an alternative route for navigating some of the heavily trafficked areas of the city.

The forthcoming inauguration on September 29 is anticipated to establish this corridor as a crucial passage for individuals travelling between East and South Delhi, as well as those heading towards Noida. With the expected reduction in travel times and improved infrastructure, officials hope that the corridor will promote more efficient traffic management in the region.

In addition to the existing features, the project includes the construction of a new road bridge across the Yamuna River, which has been identified as the tenth bridge of its kind in Delhi. This addition is expected to further enhance the transport network in the capital by improving accessibility across the river.
