Bangladesh Sees Massive Protests After Shocking Rape Case Involving Hindu Woman

A horrific sexual assault of a Hindu woman in Bangladesh’s Cumilla district has triggered a wave of nationwide demonstrations, with thousands demanding swift justice and condemning the broader climate of communal and gender-based violence.

The disturbing incident, which took place on June 26 in Muradnagar sub-district, involved the rape of a 21-year-old woman at her father’s residence. Her husband, who works overseas in Dubai, was not present at the time. She had returned home with her children to take part in the Hindu festival of Hari Seva.

Police confirmed that the main suspect, 36-year-old Fazor Ali—allegedly a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)—forced entry into the victim’s house around 10 p.m. After she denied him access, he broke in and committed the assault. Locals intervened and reportedly beat him, but he was taken to a hospital instead of being handed over to authorities. The suspect fled while receiving treatment.

Viral Assault Video Sparks Mass Protests Across Dhaka

Public outrage exploded after a video surfaced online, showing the woman stripped, pleading, and being assaulted—drawing condemnation and leading to urgent intervention by the authorities. “Direct action” was the demand echoed in the streets as Dhaka University students led massive rallies across the capital, chanting slogans and clapping in unison.

Out of five individuals arrested so far, Fazor Ali is the key accused. Four others have been taken into custody for capturing and distributing the video, which violated the survivor’s privacy and added to her trauma. Cumilla’s police chief, Nazir Ahmed Khan, confirmed that Ali was apprehended in a pre-dawn operation in Dhaka’s Sayedabad area.

The legal case has been filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. The survivor’s written complaint was lodged on June 27, and the Muradnagar police have launched a full-scale investigation.

High Court Orders Removal of Viral Video, Ensures Survivor’s Protection

The judiciary has intervened as well. In response to the viral footage, the High Court issued a directive for the video’s immediate removal and emphasised that the survivor’s safety and medical care must be ensured by the authorities.

Political parties and leaders are also weighing in. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Secretary General of the BNP, stated, “Exemplary punitive action against the culprits” must be taken. His comments come amid rising criticism that party members are being shielded in serious criminal cases.

The case has further fueled communal tensions. Minority student groups from Jagannath Hall at Dhaka University marched in solidarity with the victim, condemning what they describe as growing religiously motivated violence. “The Islamist rapist must face justice and the harshest punishment. Silence is not an option!” read one of the protest banners carried by Hindu student activists.

Rise in Minority Attacks After Sheikh Hasina’s Ouster and Yunus’s Takeover

Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government last year, Bangladesh has seen increasing unrest and reported incidents of violence targetting religious minorities. Hasina fled to India following her removal on August 5, 2024, after mass protests led by a movement known as Students Against Discrimination. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus assumed charge of the interim administration shortly afterward.

Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, Hasina’s son and former advisor, took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his anger over the attack. He wrote, “Mob attacks, terrorism and rape have surged in the last 11 months under the Yunus administration.”

Although police faced criticism for allegedly acting only after the video spread online, they insist the investigation is active and progressing. The survivor’s family, meanwhile, remains under protection as the case continues to draw nationwide and international attention.
