Steel Authority of India Limited, also known as SAIL, is a central public sector undertaking with headquarters in New Delhi, India. The company is under the ownership of the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, with an annual turnover of INR 1,03,480 Crore for the fiscal year 2021–22.
1. CSR of SAIL
According to the Company’s Act 2013, SAIL was obligated to spend Rs. 80.47 crores towards its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the last financial year. The Company spent a total of Rs. 94.24 crores for its CSR initiatives in FY22, exceeding its mandated CSR budget.
SAIL’s Social objective is synonymous with Corporate Social Responsibility, as per the company’s annual report. The Company’s goal is to conduct business in a way that benefits the communities in which it operates in social, environmental, and economic dimensions in addition to the business of making steel. The organisation has structured and carried out CSR projects since the time of its establishment with the underlying idea and a credo to make a real difference in people’s lives.
SAIL conducts its CSR projects in areas that surround its plants, mining regions, and remote locations across the country, focusing on sectors such as rural development, maintaining Model Steel Villages, education, healthcare, immunisation, antenatal care, and access to drinking water, sanitation, planting trees by the side of the road, environmental sustainability, women’s empowerment, aid for senior folks and divyangs, sustainable income production through self-help organisations, promotion of art and culture, etc.
2. CSR of SAIL to combat COVID-19
SAIL undertook a scaled response to combat the COVID-19 pandemic from its plants, units, mines and townships. During FY2021-22, the company contributed the amount of Rs. 50 crores to the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM CARES) fund.
In addition to this, the company supplied over 1.3 lakh Metric tonnes of Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) to different states of the country through railway oxygen express. SAIL plants set up a Jumbo COVID-19 care facility equipped with gaseous oxygen through dedicated pipelines from the plants with 1444 bedded covid care facilities, ventilators and ICU.
SAIL Hospitals, which staffed over 900 qualified doctors and 1500 para-medical staff to extend round-the-clock healthcare, organised 1000 dedicated COVID-19 beds with oxygen support and 129 ICU beds with ventilator support during a surge in cases. It also created 600 beds Quarantine facilities and developed COVID-19 testing facilities like RAT, RTPCR, and TRU-NAT in coordination with the respective state governments. Besides this, arrangements were made for touch-free hand sanitisers, water dispensers, spraying disinfectants, and using digital thermal recorders at prominent locations, ensuring continuous water supply in all the peripheral villages.
In order to support the vulnerable sections of society, daily-wage earners/labourers, poor peasants and their families, the SAIL plants and units distributed dry ration packets, milk packets, milk powder, khichdi, routine medicines, daily cooked meals to patients and healthcare workers, sanitary napkins for women, etc. It also facilitated the stitching and distribution of face masks, aprons and gloves.
3. CSR of SAIL in Healthcare
SAIL’s extensive and specialised healthcare infrastructure has provided specialised and basic healthcare to 177 lakh people living in the vicinity of its plants and units since 2011. in order to deliver quality healthcare at the doorsteps of the needy, the company conducts regular health camps in various villages on fixed days. During the FY 2021-22, regular health camps were organised, and 5 Mobile Medical units (MMUs) extended quality healthcare to about 64,500 villagers at their doorsteps. In addition, the 24 primary health centres located at various plants of the company exclusively provided free medical care and medicines to more than 1,25,000 patients, including about 11,300 COVID-19 patients.
4. CSR of SAIL in Education
With an aim to contribute to the development of society, SAIL is extending its support to over 77 schools, providing modern education to more than 40,000 children in the steel townships. Further, 19 Special Schools (Kalyan & Mukul Vidyalayas) are benefitting around 4865 BPL category students at integrated steel plants and mines locations with facilities of free education, mid-day meals, uniform including shoes, textbooks, stationery items, school bags, water bottles, etc. The company’s CSR is also benefitting more than 441 children from tribal and Naxal-affected areas by providing them free education, accommodation, meals, uniform and textbooks, etc., at Saranda Suvan Chhatravas, Kiriburu; Gyanodaya Chhatravas, BSP School Rajhara, Bhilai; Gyanjyoti Yojna, Bokaro.
In addition, the company has collaborated with the Akshaya Patra Foundation to provide Mid-day meals and dry ration kits to around 63,000 students in over 600 government schools in Bhilai and Rourkela.
5. CSR of SAIL in Women Empowerment and Sustainable Livelihood Generation
SAIL, through its CSR initiatives, organised vocational and specialised skill development training targeted towards sustainable income generation for 223 youths and 1306 women in areas such as Nursing, Physiotherapy, LMV Driving, Using Computers, Mobile repairing, Welding, Fitting, Electrician Training, etc. It also provided skills in improving agriculture techniques, Mushroom Cultivation, Goatery, Poultry, Fishery, Piggery, Achar/Pappad/ Agarbatti/Candle Making, Screen Printing, Handloom, Sericulture, Yarn Weaving, Tailoring, Sewing and Embroidering, Making Gloves, Spices, Towels, Gunny-Bags, Low-Cost-Sanitary Napkins, Sweet Boxes, Soaps, Smokeless Chullahs, etc. About 418 youths have been sponsored for ITI training at ITIs Bolani, Bargaon, Baliapur, Bokaro private ITI and Rourkela, etc.
6. CSR of SAIL in Extending Connectivity & Water Facilities in Rural Areas
SAIL has provided connectivity to over 79.03 lakh people across 450 villages by constructing and repairing roads. The company has also installed more than 8176 water sources, thereby enabling easy access to drinking water to over 50 lakh people living in far-flung areas of the country.
7. CSR of SAIL in Environment Conservation
SAIL, under its CSR, has maintained parks, water bodies, botanical gardens and plantations, and over five lakh trees in the areas surrounding its sites.
8. CSR of SAIL supporting Divyangs and Senior Citizens
The CSR program of SAIL is supporting divyang people and children by providing them with equipment like tricycles, motorised vehicles, callipers, hearing aids, artificial limbs, etc. In addition, the company also supports organisations like “Schools for Blind, Deaf and Mentally Challenged Children” and “Home and Hope” at Rourkela; “Ashalata Kendra” at Bokaro; various programs like “Handicapped Oriented Education Program” and “Durgpaur Handicapped Happy Home” at Durgapur; and “Cheshire Home” at Burnpur. Further, the company is supporting old age homes at its plant townships like “Siyan Sadan” at Bhilai, “Acharya Dham” at Durgapur, “Sr. Citizens Home” at Rourkela, etc.
