World Heart Day: Cardiologist Dr Debdatta Bhattacharyya explains why youngsters in India are increasingly falling prey to heart diseases

On World Heart Day 2022, The CSR Journal talks to renowned cardiologist Dr Debdatta Bhattacharyya from Kolkata about a disturbing trend of youngsters increasingly falling prey to cardiac problems, sometimes even leading to their death. Heart attack, which affected people above 50 or 60 years in earlier times, is now happening even in the age group of 30s.

Dr Bhattacharya, who is associated as a Senior Cardiologist with Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (a unit of Narayana Health) in Kolkata highlights the most common causes of a heart attack. These include sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical activities and sports, childhood obesity, altered dietary habits like the tendency to eat fast food especially among youngsters, increased trend of smoking among youngsters, early onset of hypertension among youngsters even in teenage and diabetes.
Noted comedian Raju Srivastava recently passed away. The popular comedian had suffered a massive cardiac arrest on August 10 while running on the treadmill after which he collapsed. He passed away on September 22 after being in the hospital for over a month. While sedentary lifestyle is normally associated with heart problems, this case has taken everyone by surprise.
